I think part of my long-lived fascination with Thoroughbred breeding/matchmaking/what-have-you is the mixing and matching of genes (and phenotypes), choosing which individuals to cross, which ones to inbreed, and whether to take a chance on an outcross for the so-called hybrid vigor to come up with the best possible racehorse. Luckily the FF version is far cheaper than the real world counterpart, lol
First up is [color=blue]Superconductor, a handsome dark bay colt by NCh. Eighteen Karat-Ch. Romeo’s Girl, by Romeo. Wanted to do a Shakespeare-themed name, couldn’t think of anything, tried some different names that were rejected because they already exist in the game, and finally settled on the current one after pinging around some associations with “gold”. Momma was a dirt sprinter who earned black type and $300k. This is her first foal.
Romeo’s Girl will be bred back to Doodles.
Second foal of the day is [color=red]False Gold, a beautiful bay filly by NCh. Eighteen Karat-Eudora, by WCh. Double Cross. Had some fun coming up with her name - Eudora means “excellent gift” in Greek but her sire’s name is Double Cross, hence an excellent gift of fake gold. Karat and Eudora have similar racing aptitudes so I expect False Gold to be a router.
Eudora will be bred back to Void (to try some inbreeding to platinum-ranked Patriot Games).
Well, someone was in a hurry to get out of his mother. Also, it’s another colt. Oh boy.
Arriving seven days early is [color=blue]Ore, a good-sized dark bay colt by NCh. Eighteen Karat-Ch. Not A Prospector, by Mr. Prospector (S). Name harkens back to the 1849 California Gold Rush. Eh, turns out I had a brain fart and forgot a well known racehorse and influential stud was named Forty Niner so changed it to the simpler ‘Ore’, which I think ties in with his parents’ shared theme well enough. Had an awesome one planned if Prospector foaled a filly but it was not to be. Le sigh.
That was the main reason why I claimed Not A Prospector; I just got lucky that she turned into such a solid performer. Now I just have to wait and see if the inbreeding works, :d
Another foal with an April due date arriving early, and on April Fool’s Day too!
Early morning saw the arrival of [color=red]Aine, a lovely liver chestnut filly by NCh. Carrowmore-Chicks Are Better. She is named for the Irish goddess of love and fertility. Chicks Are Better has just one living foal but that foal is a winner this year, which is nice for a created mare.
[color=red]White Gold is a pretty gray by Karat-Party For One, by Lonesome Glory. Not completely sold on the name so we’ll see. Her dam’s a winner on the turf and her sire excelled on it, so she might really like the lawn.
White Gold makes me think of the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen R. Donaldson (one of my favorite epic fantasies). It also goes great with Karat’s name!
I snatched up Party for One; don’t need more foals next year and trying to be careful with money but the price was hard to say no to. I love Lonesome Glory as a broodmare sire.
Been a while, but the last of the crop are making their appearance.
The colts have won this year with the appearance of [color=blue]Iconography, a bright chestnut by Karat-Fair Image, by Man O’War. Iconography is another one inbred to Mr. Prospector. I think one would phrase it 4S x 4D? The cross was also planned with racing aptitude in mind - sire and dam both performed admirably on dirt and turf going long. I hope their son shares that talent. Or he could turn into a monster SC sprinter, who knows.
Fair Image will be bred back to Long Live The King.
Our other May foal was born today (in 8 minutes, my time) on my birthday, =D
I’m still stuck on a name for [color=red]her so I just stuck her with a placeholder name, lol. She’s a beautiful bay by Karat-Monday Morning, by Lonesome Glory. Every time I try to think of a name that Fleetwood Mac song called “Monday Morning” starts playing in my head, =\
I totally read that ^ as you having named the foal, “Her,” and I went, “I love that!” An idea? Or maybe not a good one since I’m on the last day of finals sustained by coffee, ramen, and little sleep, haha.
