Ivy Creek's 2017 Foal Crop

It’s so crazy to be back at that point of time again - it feels like it wasn’t that long ago that our last foal of 2016 was born!  And yet, that 2016 crop has grown and changed, and now that our weanlings are arriving at the farm, it’s remarkable to see just how much they must have grown, for the new arrivals are all so tiny by comparison…

Thankfully, despite a December 31st due date, all of my mares decided to wait until January to foal.  That was the closest call we’ve ever had!

Arriving right on schedule, January 1st, we have:

QUIET RULER - 8.3hh liver chestnut colt
Sire: NCh. Sneak Peek {B} (What’s It Worth {P} x Doubletake {G})
Dam: Must Be Royal (GCh. Must Be Magic {S} x Ch. Jungle Queen {S})
This handsome colt is the second foal from his dam, behind her yearling Bellagio filly.  Mom was only a winner on the track, though she is 1/2 to MSWs GCh. Lonesome King, Ch. Lonely at the Top, Ch. Treasured Secret, and Ch. Lion King.  I’m hoping that her dam’s (Jungle Queen’s) producing powers have somehow passed on to her.  Sneak Peek has a handful of MSW foals himself, and is royally bred.  I haven’t gotten to race any Sneak Peek get, so I’m looking forward to trying my hand at that.
MUST BE ROYAL is coming back to the farm to see our own stallion, Witness.

In related news, two of our race mares have been retired, and both also are visiting Witness - stakes winner Ch. Twirlaway (x Whirlaway) and the lightly raced multi-winner, I’m Feelin’ Lucky (created).
Also, formerly leased out Renegade Song (x Cigar) has returned to us, and is now visiting Frankel.

All healthy so far!

Love the name. =)

Yay for your mare crossing her legs, and ditto on the name. Very regal.

Me three, love the name.

Me four, love the name and the foal.

We have our second foal!

She is tiny, but a striking brown with 3 big socks - and hopefully an attitude to match!

BOLD PROPOSAL - 8.0hh brown filly
SIRE: ICh. Stressed {B} (Secretariat {S} x Lady O’War {G})
DAM: Ch. Bold Jewel (Bold Ruler {G} x Queen’s Jewel {S})
This flashy filly is the first from one of our better racemares to date - Bold Jewel is a MSW/MSP mare who earned a speed record over 10f turf, despite my limited activity level during her race years.  I truly believe she could have been great if I had given her more attention (she averaged only 5 starts per year). So, as you can imagine, I am super excited to see a healthy filly from her.  As for her sire, I’m not overly impressed (I was hoping his get would have proven themselves by now, with his oldest crop just turned 4), but maybe they are just late bloomers.  I guess time will tell!
BOLD JEWEL is visiting one of my favorite stallions, Magic Cross.

Another leased-out mare also dropped her foal, and so, when she returns to us, Devil’s Dream (Devil May Care) is visiting Carrowmore.

All healthy so far!

Love the name, Alyssa. Congrats on the healthy filly!

Lovely name.

What a crazy, crazy month.  In the midst of it, my FF time has suffered, and so I am very delayed on updating you on our new arrivals.  And so, allow me to introduce:

ARISTOCRATIC - 9.3hh dark bay colt
SIRE: WCh. King David {B} (Bold Ruler {G} x Faith Hill {P})
DAM: Ch. Cosmopolitan (A.P. Indy {S} x Drink Til He’s Cute {B})
This is our first foal from this stakes winning mare, who we recently purchased.  She’s a tall mare who matured during the ideal 2/3yo years, so we felt she would be a good addition to our broodmare band.  We’ve had luck with King David as a sire, who gave us a now-4yo winner and a now-3yo stakes placed filly, Queen Catarina.  I’m really hoping that this colt will do well, but it will be a while until we know how his dam can produce.  Fingers crossed!
COSMOPOLITAN has been bred to our own stallion, Witness - she’s exactly what we wanted in a cross for him!  A tall sprinter SW.  I’m excited at the prospect.

CARADOC - 9.2hh black colt
SIRE: ICh. Chivalry {B} (What’s It Worth {P} x Honor Bright {S})
DAM: Fleur’s Debate {S} (WCh. What’s Debatable {S} x Fleur de Lis {S})
Caradoc is named for one of the Knights of the Round Table - one of Arthur’s most trusted allies.  It seemed a fitting name, thanks to his sire.  This is my first foal from him, despite his desirable pedigree.  He doesn’t have very many foals of racing age yet, but he does have several stakes level runners among them.  I’m hoping that he is a sire whose quality will show more over time.  As for the dam, she’s only got two runners to date, but the oldest is our stakes winner, With A Fleurish.  Hopefully this combination will prove equally effective.
FLEUR’S DEBATE has been sent to visit the freshman sire, Lucky Streak.

KERRIED AWAY - 10.3hh bay filly
SIRE:  ICh. Take Me Away {B} (Cigar {G} x Take Account {P})
DAM: Ch. Keria Toon {B} (created)
I was incredibly shocked to see this very TALL filly born.  This is one of my more promising foals, judging by her dam.  Although she only has one foal to race, that now-3yo filly, Singsong, has never been out of the top 3.  Add in Take Me Away to the mix, and you have the potential for a really decent runner, in my opinion.  He’s still a young stud who has plenty of time to prove himself.  We’ll all be watching his first crop eagerly in their 3YO season this year, I’m sure.
KERIA TOON was also sent to see our stallion, Witness.  He’s a lucky fellow this year!

MADD ABOUT YOU - 9.3hh dark bay filly
SIRE: WCh. Express Yourself (What’s It Worth {P} x GCh. Make An Impression {G})
DAM: GCh. Madd Karol (created)
This one is a sentimental favorite, as well as a truly well-bred foal.  First, her dam was my starter mare (and first really consistent stakes winning mare), so of course I am excited to have her first daughter arrive safe and sound.  Then, Express Yourself is a really exciting young stallion with a killer pedigree and race record.  This pretty little filly is staying with us, that’s for sure.  Who knows if she will be a hurdler (with a complete aversion to the flat, ugh) like mom - but either way, she ought to have wings on her hooves.
MADD KAROL is visiting another Aussie stallion, Strider, for yet another exciting cross.

PRAISE ADONAI - 8.2hh light bay colt
SIRE: GCh. One Lucky Soul (GCh. My Lucky Day {S} x Golden Legend {G})
DAM: The Cover Girl {B}
This little boy, by comparison, is a little more unassuming.  His sire only earned a GCh. title before retiring, though he placed among the best in the Kentucky Derby & Preakness, for example, and even won the Dubai World Cup.  His dam has thrown primarily winners, with a couple of stakes winners in the mix.  More than likely, he will be a regular allowance runner - but it’s usually the ones I say that about that go on to surprise me in a major way.   And so we will see!
THE COVER GIRL is in foal to Demand The Best for 2018.

Formerly leased-out mare, Etta James (x Jazz It Up) has returned to us, and is now in foal to our boy, Witness.

All healthy so far!

Absolutely love all of the names!

Me too.

Cute names!

It’s shaping up to be a colt-laden year at this rate, but that’s ok - maybe there’s a future stallion in among them, if I’m lucky:

Two more boys have arrived safely at the farm, and I’d like you to meet them.

CAPE GIRARDEAU - 8.2hh chestnut colt
SIRE: NCh. Dark Demand (Black Knight {S} x In Demand {G})
DAM: Cape Cod Rose (created)
This slight colt was technically bred by Black Storm West, and was purchased in-utero.  However, he was the sole reason for the purchase of his dam, for his sire is one we are very hopeful about.  We will know more soon, as his first two year olds are currently gearing up for their debuts.  His dam had a decent record, with over 50% OTB in non-stakes races (and very near 50% if you include stakes starts as well).  Still, I’m not convinced she’s what we’re looking for long-term in our herd, so she is currently offered for sale, in foal, for the price of the stud fee only.  He is named for a town in my state - it’s pronounced “jih-rahr-doe”.  I thought it had an eloquent ring to it.
CAPE COD ROSE has been bred to Long Live The King and is for sale for $6,000.

BLAMELESS - 10.2hh blue roan colt
SIRE: WCh. Strider {G} (Highland Rogue {P} x Seeing Starz {P})
DAM: Ch. Heartless {S} (Affirmed {S} x Xena {B})
This foal is the opposite of CG - tall and flashy.  He also was technically bred elsewhere, by FF.  He and his dam were my color war prize, and so I’m quite relieved to see him arrive safely.  How could I turn down such an illustrious pedigree?  I have high hopes for this colt.  He was named with the train of thought: “if his dam is heartless or cruel, he should be considered blameless for her faults”.  In my head, it works (though mom is actually quite tame!)  He is half to MSW Ch. Imperial Gesture and SP Heartless Junction.
HEARTLESS is on her way to see Ghostzapper now.

6 colts | 3 fillies | 32 still due

Love the names.

Love blameless

Glad Cape Cod Rose gave you a nice, healthy foal! I especially love the name Blameless.

And another!  You guessed it - another colt!

FLAMETHROWER - 8.0hh bay colt
SIRE: ICh. Ring of Fire {S} (Cross Roads {S} x Playing with Fire {P})
DAM: Oh So Sharp {G} (Dr. Time {B} x Sweet Escapes {S})
This tiny bugger is 1/2 to my active MSW mare, Oh So Proud, who was a later bloomer, but is still doing well at the stakes level at the age of 5.  And so, judging by this and by his small stature, this boy might take a while to find his stride, but when he does, it will most likely be worth the wait.  His sire is proving to be better and better as time rolls on, so I’m excited to see what this cross can do.
OH SO SHARP is heading home to the farm to see Witness.  He’s a lucky man.

7 colts | 3 fillies | 31 still due
All healthy so far!

Love the name.

Seriously, colts…those fillies don’t stand a chance of catching up at this rate.  ::)  But thankfully everyone is healthy, which I prefer above all.

TO THE NINES - 9.2hh flea-bitten grey colt
SIRE: NCh. Formal Occasion (GCh. Highland Laird {S} x Jacket Required {G})
DAM: Klondike Nights {S} (Black Knight {S} x Klondike Gold {S})
Love those greys!  This fellow is 1/2 to MSW Ch. Coquette, one of our better 2YOs last year.  Here’s hoping for a bit of that same talent.  His sire is, of course, new to the game, but I like a bit of mystery.  In fact, Coquette was the first filly born by her sire, and she turned out splendidly!
KLONDIKE NIGHTS is now visiting our home stallion, Witness.

We also have a few more breedings to report:
Leased-out maiden, SP I’m a Star, gave birth to a filly (figures!) before returning to us - she visits Candidate next.
Syrah (x Bold Ruler) was retired - she started the year with a win and a speed record, so I let her go out in style. She visits Count Me In.
We claimed - and retired - Cigarillo (x Cigar), a double gold-bred mare.  So of course we booked her to Slew O’Scots immediately! (Edinburgh, To Die For)

Love the name! Great that it wasn’t yet taken.
