Ivy Creek Farm's 2014 Foal Crop

This year promises to be our biggest foal crop by a longshot, and I couldn’t be happier!  Technically, this is our third foal crop, and as of Jan. 1, we had 24 very fat & sassy mares dotting our pastures.

So far, two have foaled early, but both are healthy and well, thank goodness:

[color=blue]Sovereign Glory
8.2hh bay colt
Sire: ICh. Magic Glory (B)
Dam: Sovereign Song (x created)

This guy is going to be quite the mystery, as he is the first foal from his dam, and his dad’s first crop just turned three (and haven’t seemed to hit their stride yet).  Dad was versatile on the track, but he didn’t really shine until he tried hurdles.  Mom never ran on the flat, but holds a speed record for 8.5f SC.  He’ll probably like the jumps when he’s older.  Not sure who mom will visit next…
ETA: Mom has been sent to see Bellagio for her next baby.

[color=red]Sweet Home Alabama
7.2hh dark bay filly
Sire: NCh. I’m A Classic (S)
Dam: Dixie Love (x created)

I’m surprised this name wasn’t taken! It seemed fitting - a classic song about the love of your dixie home state.   :slight_smile:  I’m A Classic is one of my favorite sires in the game, currently.  He has produced quite a few stakes quality babies, although they appear to really mature later on.  This is the second foal (and second filly) from Dixie Love, a mare we stand mostly because we think she’s cute, although she did earn several 100+ SFs when she ran.  Mom has a date with Sleipner next.

[color=blue]1 colt: [color=red]1 filly : 22 to go!

Another surprise in the barn yesterday morning:

[color=red]Coquette
9.0hh dark grey filly
Sire: NCh. Bellagio
Dam: Klondike Nights (B) (x Black Knight (S))

This is the first foal from freshman sire, Bellagio, and what a foal to start out with!  Tall, and a lovely dark grey…so striking!  We chose this cross to emulate MSP Ch. Klondike Glory - the dam’s 1/2 brother, and from the same sire as Bellagio (Lonesome Glory).  Both of Klondike Night’s two foals to race are multi-winners, so this should be interesting!  We also have her yearling colt, I’m Your Eskimo.  Still deciding on who mom will go visit next.
ETA: Mom has been sent to see All Jazzed Up.
ETA: Name has been changed from “Bellavia” to “Coquette” - flirtatious girl!

[color=blue]1 colt : [color=red]2 fillies : 21 to go!

Busy week at Ivy Creek!

We’ve had 4 foals born in the last four days:

[color=blue]Mood Indigo
9.2hh bay colt
Sire: WCh. All Jazzed Up
Dam: Fleur’s Debate (x WCh. What’s Debatable (S))

This fellow is named after the 1931 Grammy-winning jazz song by Duke Ellington.  I was researching jazz, and saw a section on the debate about what is or isn’t considered jazz, and Duke said “It’s all music” to quiet that debate.  Seemed fitting.   :slight_smile:  Dad needs no introduction, and mom is 3/4 to MSW NCh. Nightshade & 1/2 to SP Rings of Saturn.  This is her second foal for us, as she produced the yearling filly With A Fleurish last year.  Mom is visiting Rumor Has It next, in hopes of emulating the success of the What’s Debatable/Planet Hollywood cross that produced Ch. Keep Quiet.

[color=red]Queen Catarina
9.1hh black filly
Sire: WCh. King David (B)
Dam: Uptown Girl (x created)

Named after Queen Catherine of Braganza (Portugal), the queen consort (to King Charles II of England) for which Queens, New York was supposedly named in 1683.  Dad’s eldest babies are just now turning 3, so here’s hoping they’re still waiting to mature - there are several winners, but nothing outstanding…YET.  Mom never ran at 2 or 3, so here’s hoping she missed her best years, as she wasn’t anything spectacular (though she was rather consistant) at 4.  Last year she gave us a colt, yearling Goodnight Saigon.  Not sure who mom is visiting next.
ETA: Mom has been sent to see Stressed.

[color=blue]Star of Lakshmi
9.1hh light bay colt
Sire: Octagonal
Dam: The Cover Girl (S) (x created)

The Star of Lakshmi is an eight-pointed star symbol made by overlapping two square outlines.  Who knows how dad will fare in the game, but it sure is nice to see that name in the pedigree, I think.   :slight_smile:  The Cover Girl is one of our more proven broodmares, though this is only the second foal (and second colt) she has produced for us, as she gave us the yearling colt Givenchy.  She has also produced SW Ch. Undercover Girl and SW Ch. Cover Story.  Mom is visiting Simply Heroic next to create a 3/4 sibling to Undercover Girl.

[color=blue]Zadar
8.3hh dark bay colt
Sire: ICh. What’s Your Point
Dam: Adriatic Swan (x created)

Named after the Croatian city on the rocky, pointy eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea.  This is the first foal from our maiden mare, Adriatic Swan, so at this point, we’re just happy he’s healthy.  Dad’s foals have yet to hit the track, either…but of course, dad could run, and mom holds a speed record and was a multi-winner.  Hopefully he’ll at least be a decent allowance pony.  Not sure who we’re sending mom to this time around.
ETA: Mom has visited Starzen this year.

[color=blue]4 colts: [color=red]3 fillies : 17 to go!

One new colt added to our ranks yesterday morning…  The boys have a strong lead over here!

[color=blue]Adomnan
9.3hh black colt
Sire: ICh. Devil His Due
Dam: Riata (x created)

Named after the author of Vita of Saint Columba, which claims that the ancient Gaelic overkingdom, Dal Riata, was a Christian nation (true or not, who knows).  Oh yeah, and Adomnan of Iona is a saint, to boot…goes along well with dad’s name.  Who knows how this boy will turn out, as dad is unproven in the shed.  This is the second foal from his dam, who was probably a really late maturer but never did anything too stellar on the track in her brief career.  I’ll be happy with a good allowance pony, but fingers crossed for more!
ETA: Mom has been sent to see Ring of Fire.

[color=blue]5 colts: [color=red]3 fillies : 16 to go!

What a cutie!  :slight_smile:

Thank you!   :slight_smile:

And perhaps I spoke too soon about the colt/filly ratio…  Today we met:

[color=red]Singsong
9.2hh bay filly
Sire: Rahy (S)
Dam: Ch. Keria Toon (x created)

I’m so excited about this girl!  As we all know, Rahy has proven to be a pretty exciting new stud so far, and this is the first foal from my stakes-winning turf mare, Keria Toon.  I’m just glad she got through her first pregnancy safe and sound, but to get a gorgeous Rahy filly out of it…well, I couldn’t be more pleased.   :slight_smile:
ETA: Mom has been sent to see Gunningdownromance this time.

[color=blue]5 colts: [color=red]4 fillies : 15 to go!

Another healthy filly joined our growing family today:

[color=red]Talkofthetown
9.1hh bay filly
Sire: Ch. Rumor Has It (S)
Dam: CrossTheThreshold (G) (x created)

Another one to be excited about!  We purchased CrossTheThreshold in foal at this year’s Select auction.  We currently own her 2YO filly as well, Afterglow (x Affirmed).  From four foals to race, she has produced MSW GCh. Debut Performance, SW Encore Performance, and SP Murder By Numbers.  This filly’s sire has also had similar success from his few crops to race, with all being at least winners.  We’ve got high hopes for this little looker!  Oh, and mom is visiting I’m A Classic this time for a 3/4 sibling to Debut Performance.

And the fillies have tied it…

[color=blue]5 colts: [color=red]5 fillies : 14 to go!

Another smooth birth:

[color=red]Comedy Queen
9.3hh dark bay filly
Sire: FFCh. High Chances
Dam: Queen of Humor (x created)

This is mom’s first foal, so we’re just glad everyone is safe and sound.  Mom was no superstar, but she DOES hold 3 speed records at 5, 14, and 16f, and once earned a SF of 217!  She only ran on the flat, but did well on both surfaces.  Add dad’s superpowers to the mix, and we’re hoping for something magical.
ETA: Mom is visiting Worth My While this year.

[color=blue]5 colts: [color=red]6 fillies : 13 to go!

lol…ditto! Cute baby by the way. Love the name. :slight_smile:

Thanks!  :slight_smile:  I know the meaning is basically the same as mom’s name, but I like it.

Another girl joined our ranks:

[color=red]Peekundercovers
9.2hh dark grey filly
Sire: NCh. Sneak Peek (S)
Dam: Morning Deelites (x created)

Don’t be surprised if this gal’s name gets changed, although it’s finally starting to grow on me.  Dad had a pretty successful first few crops to race, all his just-turned-4YOs and up are at least winners, with 2 SW and a SP from 7 total foals from his first 3 crops.  This is mom’s second foal, as she produced the colt, Javasong (x Cryptic Ballad) last year.  She wasn’t much of a success on the track, but also wasn’t given a very long career in which to prove herself.  We’ll have to see how this one turns out.  Not sure who mom is visiting this year, but I might consider leasing her out instead.

[color=blue]5 colts: [color=red]7 fillies : 12 to go!

LOL…OMG…oh the possibilities with that cross! I like your choice. :slight_smile:

I know!  That made it kinda fun, though, but still wanted it to be PG.  ;)  Glad you like it, though.

Now announcing a new colt:

[color=blue]Coup d’Etat
7.3hh black colt
Sire: ICh. Ring of Fire (B)
Dam: Je Suis Prest (x created)

Dad’s first crop to race has been pretty successful, but mom’s breeding potential has yet to be tested.  Last year she produced the colt, Imprimis, by King David, which was her first foal.  Time will tell.  However, mom earned pretty high SFs for her time, and despite her short-lived career, had a pretty high on-the-board percentage in non-stakes.  Mom is visiting Dark Demand next.

[color=blue]6 colts: [color=red]7 fillies : 11 to go!

Love the name!

Thanks Shanthi!  I was a bit surprised it wasn’t taken yet!

Good and bad news to announce today.  The bad news is that, after being over 3 weeks overdue, our beloved broodmare, A.P. Whiskey (by A.P. Indy {G}, out of Wine n’Roses {S}), struggled with a very tough birth.  Unfortunately, the damage was already done by the time our vet arrived, and we were unable to save her.  Her foal, thankfully, survived the ordeal, and though we are worried for him, he appears to be responding well to treatment, and the vet is optimistic.  A.P. Whiskey, in her short life, has produced 5 foals (including her orphan foal), 3 fillies and 2 colts.  Her 4YO filly by Irish River is multi-placed but hasn’t run in almost a year, and her 3YO filly by Seattle Sorcerer only started 3 times as a young juvenile.  Both are owned by the now-inactive Windward Farms.  Her 2YO colt, Valyrian Steel (x Seattle Sorcerer), is owned by Snowbird International, so it should be interesting to see what one of her offspring can do under consistant management.  We currently own her yearling filly, A.P. Stoli (x Stressed), who was purchased in-utero.  A.P. Whiskey was booked to Highland Magic, in hopes of producing a 3/4 sibling to her SW,MSP half brother, Dark Thorn.  That’s unfortunate…  :frowning:

Anyhow, to focus on the good, here is the newest addition to Ivy Creek:

[color=blue]Whiskey Charmer
9.0hh blood bay colt
Sire: Silver Charm
Dam: A.P. Whiskey (B) (x A.P. Indy (G))

This gangly fellow, whose name is tentative, is a lot of a mystery.  He’s from his sire’s first crop, and his half-siblings haven’t run much.  He has some good breeding on his dam’s side of the pedigree, anyway, so only time will tell how he’ll turn out.

[color=blue]7 colts: [color=red]7 fillies : 10 to go!
(1 broodmare deceased)

Sorry to hear about your mare, but the colt is beautiful. Good luck with him.

Yeah, for sure, that’s tough.  She was a nice mare.

I like the name you chose for the colt.  I think it has a nice ring to it. :slight_smile:

Thanks for all the well-wishes, guys.  As the spring weather rolls into town, we’re constantly reminded that life goes on, and the babies are growing so quickly before our eyes!  Whiskey Charmer has accepted the bottle and appears to be thriving.  He’s already grown an inch and is getting ever more confident and sure of himself as time goes on.  We’re hoping that some of our more mellow, seasoned broodmares and our two retired geldings, No Goody Clone and Trophy, will be able to show him the secrets of being a horse that mom won’t be able to teach him.

Thanks to all the time, attention, and worry that have been devoted to caring for the orphan colt, we are a few days late in announcing (and naming) our newest addition.  Please meet:

[color=blue]Mimic
10.0hh dark bay colt
Sire: WCh. I’m Your Angel (B)
Dam: Slew Copy (x created)

We were more than pleased to lay eyes on Slew Copy’s healthy, HUGE boy the other day.  Dad’s first crop is just hitting the tracks this week, and one of the 3 to run broke his maiden his first time out, which is promising.  This is only mom’s second foal, as she produced the yearling filly, As Slew Promise (x As You Wish), for us last season.  Only time will tell how this boy will turn out in the end, but we’re hopeful.  Mom didn’t have a stellar record, but she was started as a 5YO (after her prime?) over hurdles (would she have preferred the flat?).  We’re going on a hunch here, and based on sentiments.

[color=blue]8 colts: [color=red]7 fillies : 9 to go!
(1 broodmare deceased)

Another new baby, and the colt/filly ratio remains even!  Announcing:

[color=red]Xcientist
8.1hh bay filly
Sire: WCh. Crystal Rainbow (S)
Dam: Fizzix (x Seabiscuit (S))

A dainty, beautiful little girl…couldn’t be happier.  This is mom’s first ever foal, and while mom doesn’t have the most stellar record, she also didn’t have good, consistant management and appears to have been a late bloomer.  She also has a good pedigree - double silver-bred, and 1/2 to MSW Ch. Torrid, MSW Ch. Subject to Learn, MSW Ch. Cut to the Chase, and 3 other SP 1/2 siblings.  And dad is proving to be quite a sire, too - a large percentage of his now-3YO crop are stakes quality.  High hopes for this girl!
Mom is booked to Turn n’Burn for a 3/4 sibling to Torrid!

[color=blue]8 colts: [color=red]8 fillies : 8 to go!
(1 broodmare deceased)

Woohoo!  Another girl!

[color=red]Oh Artemis
8.2hh black filly
Sire: NCh. Moonover Boy (S)
Dam: Oh So Sharp (x Dr. Time (B))

Pretty little filly who is 1/2 to 3YO G1 stakes winner, Chicago’s Demon - in only two starts!  We own mom’s 2YO filly, Oh So Proud (x Highland Pride), who will run soon (she’s one of our first two homebreds!)  Mom didn’t do much on the track herself, but she was started late (5YO), and only had 3 flat starts before switching to SC.  She IS 1/2 to MSW Ch. Semi Sweet, though, so maybe there is a hint of star power in her genes somewhere.  We’ll see how they turn out!  I think we’re changing mom’s breeding plans, and aiming her at a date with the newly retired Unabridged.  :slight_smile:

[color=blue]8 colts: [color=red]9 fillies : 7 to go!
(1 broodmare deceased)

Another colt, and what a guy!!  We’ve got big dreams for this one…

[color=blue]Fight The Twilight
8.2hh bay colt
Sire: WCh. Nightfight
Dam: ICh. Twilight Embers (x Ch. Irish River (G))

Probably one of the best non-Rogue/Worth/Wood pedigrees you can get, in my opinion, anyway.  But then I’m biased.   :stuck_out_tongue:  Dad is MSW multi-millionaire dirt superstar, whose first foals are only yearlings.  Mom is at least as impressive, having been named to 2008 HOTY, 3YO Filly, and Classic Horse, as well as being a MSW multi-millionaire, doing well over both surfaces.  Dad holds 5 speed records; mom holds 8 records.  All in all, this little guy has a lot to live up to.  His 3YO 1/2 sibling (x Secretariat) broke his maiden on his first attempt, and has not run since, and the 2YO (x Danzig) hasn’t raced yet either.  Unfortunately, both are FF-owned, so who knows when/if they will ever run again.  We currently own the yearling, a filly by Alley Cat named CIAO BELLA, so we’ll see what happens in a year.   :slight_smile:  Meanwhile, mom is headed to visit the famed SPOCK, for an oh-so-droolworthy HOTY x HOTY foal.  Can’t wait!!!

(PS - If anyone needs to swap for a later booking to Spock, let me know.  She isn’t booked 'til the first 1/2 of July - I didn’t want to take any chances with this one!  :D)

[color=blue]9 colts: [color=red]9 fillies : 6 to go!
(1 broodmare deceased)
