Freshmen Sires 2015

With the 2yo races fast approaching I thought it’d be appropriate to have a thread on the sires with their first runners this year. The following studs have their first 2yo hitting the tracks in the upcoming weeks and months:

Chivalry
Cryptic Ballad
Dark Continent
Gunningdownromance
Lasting Spirit
Nightfight
Stressed
Strider
What’s Your Point

So, any feelings on who’ll make the biggest impact this year?

I think Strider will do well. Can’t go past Highland Rogue… BUT, the sons of Worth have done brilliantly recently - Foolhardy and Candidate’s first runners were fantastic!

Agree with Jason.  Looking forward to Strider.  Nightfight should be interesting, too.

On a personal note, I’m looking forward to DC’s foals.  As a 2yo he won the first 2yo race of the year (back when there was only one or two per race card), and I would be TICKLED if one of his get did the same.  But now I’ve gone and jinxed it.

Well i’ve got to go with my boy, What’s your Point, can’t wait to see his guys run!

Good luck to everyone  I only own a Dark Continent and Gunningdownromance 2yo (several yearlings/weanlings by the 2015 freshmen sires, though). Was curious, so I checked to see how many foals by each stud was racing tomorrow:

Chivalry - 0
Cryptic Ballad - 1
Dark Continent - 2
Gunningdownromance - 1
Lasting Spirit - 2
Nightfight - 4
Stressed - 2
Strider - 3
What’s Your Point - 0

Lotsa Nightflight’s for this weekend!

I also only have two-year-olds by Dark Continent and Gunningdownromance. The Dark Continent filly will get sent out soon, but the Gunningdownromance colt is a late May foal and he’s still a midget, so we’ll hold off on him for a little bit. Very excited to see how the studs’ first crops do!

Yay, I’m def backing my boy Nightfight.  Not sure how his 2yos will do since I don’t have much to compare with his 2yo record but all looks promising. I’m also looking forward to Gunningdownromance 2yo’s since he was such a monster.

This is my favourite time of year when the babies start to make their debuts as you never know how good they could be. I’ve got a Strider colt who’ll be out maybe May/June time and a Lasting Spirit filly who debuts on Wednesday (impulse buy at the 2yo sale so not sure what to expect from her). I’ve also got a mare IF to DC for 2016 so hoping he does well plus I’ve leased What’s Your Point’s dam for a 2016 baby so fingers crossed for them all. I also think Nightfight could do pretty well and he’s in my mind for a couple of mares for next year. Exciting times!

I’ve got a Strider foal to start on the 9th. I hope she runs well… bites lip

So how’d the boys do? I saw a Nightfight win…

Neither HC nor DC foals had a good week.  Sigh.

So far I think only Nightfight had a winner from the new boys. Early days yet though so plenty of time for DC and co to catch up.

The 2YO winners came from…

As You Wish (which is nice to know as I have a filly by him out of a Gold-rated mare starting next Saturday!)
Nightfight
A.P. Indy x2
Point Given
Rumor Has It
Highland Magic (have one of mine by him out of a NCh. mare starting on Wednesday)
Irish River
Stressed
Giant’s Causeway

So, with three days of races with 2yo runners we currently have 4 of the aforementioned stallions with winners on the board.

Currently leading the way is Nightfight (CDS) with three runners and three placed horses from nine starters. Stressed (FF) has also got off to a great start with two winners from four runners giving him a 50% winner to runner ratio. Gunningdownromance (Morning Star) and What’s Your Point (Semiahmoo) have had one winner each (three and four runners respectively). All four have currently attained a bronze breeding rank.

Of the runners currently entered for Wednesdays races, Nightfight and What’s Your Point have five runners each, Strider has three with Stressed, Gunningdownromance, Cryptic Ballad and Dark Continent with one runner each. Strider appears to have made quite a slow start despite having the most runners so far (10) however, looking back at his own career he didn’t break his maiden until he was three. Plenty of reason to keep the faith if you have a Strider baby!

I’ve got the Dark Continent filly going out on Wednesday and I’m pretty curious to see how she does. I’m not expecting her to do brilliantly (her dam was a very late maturer, only broke her maiden as a 4yo and had her best year at 5yo) but I’m intrigued. We shall see!

Good luck with her!  DC did okay as a 2yo, but really came into his own as a 3yo and 4yo.  So, while I’m hopeful that his 2yos will do well, I think next year will be far more telling of his capabilities as a sire.  =)

my Night Fight Filly ran 2nd in her maiden race and just won her second time out , so add another win to Night Fights get column!!
(Nightlit Haze)

DC has two winners.  One, Pride Lands, is undefeated. Very pleased.

i have one DC 2yo but was a summer birth so isnt ready to hit the track yet.

Another quick update. Following Saturday’s races (04/30/15) only Chivalry and Cryptic Ballad are yet to sire a winner although with only 4 and 5 starters respectively there’s still time for them to catch up.

Nightfight still leads the way with 6 winners from 15 runners including the unbeaten filly Hopes Flight (3 starts) and stakes placed Buenos Aires.

It took Lasting Spirit until Saturday to get a winner on the board but like buses three came along at once with Decapitator, Spirit Of Autumn and Money Spirit all making winning debuts.

Dark Continent, Gunningdownromance, Stressed and Strider have two winners each (14, 9, 6 and 20 starters respectively).

What’s Your Point has Classy Point as his only winner from 12 starters so far.
