Famous Stallions?

After talking with Shanthi a couple of times… she said she would consider bringing in 4-6 famous stallions next year… So I’m posting to see what stallions you might like to see brought into FF…

There are a few criteria… Stallion must be alive and still standing at public stud… Stallion must have retired to stud no later than 2005 (making first crop to race in 2008)… No geldings (even if they stood to stud at sometime in the past)… No sons of stallions currently standing in FF (this would be counter productive to the sires already here)…

Your Mission should you choose to accept… is to suggest stallions and why you feel they should be brought into the game… with limited openings for famous stallions… I want to present what the majority of FF members would like to see… once I think people are done suggesting stallions… I’lll post a poll and the membership will get a chance to vote on the top horses suggested… from there I’ll present the list to Shanthi… and she will have final say on who she brings in…

I’m looking forward to seeing all the pretty Stallions people suggest… Have fun with this…

(edited to reflect more criteria)

My suggestions, in no particular order

1 Silver Charm (s. 1994 by Silver Buck out of Bonnie’s Poker) 24 12-7-2 $6,944,369 Dirt

No geldings, please.  So yes, currently alive and standing at stud.

A couple NY studs that might be worth looking up:

  1. Golden Missile (s. 1995 by A.P. Indy out of Santa Catalina) 25 7-7-4 $2,194,510
3rd in 1999 BC Classic by Cat Thief and Budroyale

Is Currently the #1 sire in NYS

From 96 runners, FREUD is sire of 21 blacktype performers and winners of more than $4.2 million.

FREUD

The name’s fine.

Freud’s out, already, unless Giant’s Causeway gets ditched, since they’re full siblings.

To add a bit of international interest how about High Chapparal 1999 Bay 16.0

I’m just striking out left and right here, aren’t I, Shanthi?

No geldings, no Freud…

Gotta love Smart Strike: 8 starts -6 wins -1 place -0 show $337,376

Major Wins:
GIII Salvator Mile Handicap (1 Mile Dirt)
GI Philip H. Iselin Stakes (1 1/8 Miles Dirt)

He is a son of Mr. Prospector so I don’t know if that would make him ineligable or not because Mr. Prospector is retired. His dam is Classy n’ Smart who is in the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame.

Smart Strike was on a roll in his racing career when it was cut short by a condylar fracture suffured during a work in prepping for the Breeder’s Cup.

Progeny of Note:

Curlin - 2007 American Horse of the Year
English Channel - 2007 American Champion Male Turf Horse
Added Edge - 2002 Canadian Champion 2yo Colt
Portcullis - 2002 Champion Grass Horse In Canada
Soaring Free - 2004 Canadian Horse of the Year
Fleetstreet Dancer - Won GI Japan Cup Dirt

Or…

Dynaformer (30 starts: 7 wins - 5 places - 2 shows) $671,207

Sired by Roberto: Epsom Derby Winner

Out of Andover Way: GI Winner

Major Wins:
GII Jersey Derby
GII Discovery Handicap

Progeny of Note:
Perfect Drift - Earnings over $4 million, competitive in top races throughout his career until he retired at age 9
Dynever - Earnings over $2 million, 3rd in the Breeders Cup Classic, 2nd in the Dubai World Cup
Barbaro - Undefeated, Derby Winner
Film Maker - Earnings over $2 million, GI Winner on Turf, finished no worse than third three years in a row in the Breeder’s Cup F/M Turf
Riskaverse - Multiple GI Winner on the Turf
Mcdynamo - Won Breeder’s Cup Steeplechase 5 years in a row, I believe first SC’er to become a millionare

I really just don’t think we should be adding famous stallions again. We had how many retire this year? And we want to bring more back? Why? We have stallions in this game that barely see mares as it is. They are a great outcross but look at the work that would need to be put in again for more/new stallions. Just my two cents.

Just some of my suggestions.

I’ve got to agree with this, aren’t we better allowing the game to develop it’s own lines? If we need more stallions then the criteria to become a stallion could be lowered. As it stands it’s set fairly high  :astonished:

In addition to this, a colt must win at least 9 stakes races (any grade), and at least 1 Grade 1 race (total of at least 10 stakes wins).

How many in ‘real’ life actually win 10 stakes races? Only a handful I’d say

I agree with this also.

Yeah I also agree with Andy because there are many VERY well bred VERY good racers that just couldn’t do the 9  stakes because the owner was unable to afford entries when the horse was in its prime, or because of a career ending injury that may have stuck in the middle of the run to stud-dom, and yes they may have come back from that injury but it may have been once they were over the hill  :-\

just my 2 cents there.

can’t find any yet but he has covered Desert King’s daughter Makybe Diva

I am open to the idea of not adding any new stallions as well.  I am not open to the idea of lowing the standards for stud qualification of in-game studs.

Keep the suggestions coming.  If we add new studs, I’d like to do it effective Jan 1.

Hmm I must say I’ll have to agree with everyone saying no to adding more studs in. I think the qualifications are great; they’re a goal and an excellent challenge. It just seems proven (by this I mean meeting stud qualifications) in-game raced studs aren’t getting the recognition they deserve because there’s a famous name to choose over them. :-\

I don’t think it’s more complicated than the famous stallions attracting mares.

If a sire has several sons at stud, people will tend to gravitate to the stallion that was/is the most successful–either on the track on in the shed.  This puts the less than exceptional sons (only in comparison) at a disadvantage when it comes to attracting mares.

If someone’s looking for a stallion based solely on performance, chances are they’re going to try and breed to the best stallion they can afford.  They could make their decision based on # of stakes wins, eclipse awards, hall of fame standing, etc. Given this logic, it should be no surprise that Strider was booked full in his first season.

The higher standards make excellence the average (which is a GREAT thing…you never used to be able to breed to a 10 SW stallion for under $10k).  So, it’s just that because there are so many awesomely average studs, things are just that much more competitive.  It used to be if your stud had more than 6 or 7 stakes wins, people would be more inclined to pick your stud.  Now, it seems as if your stud has to have 12 or 13 stakes wins to really stand out.  Bonus points for multiple G1s.

This is GREAT for newbies who don’t know a thing about breeding.  Chances are they’re going to pick an AWESOME stud who’s going to amazingly affordable because of the competition.

I guess the key to attracting mares is marketing.  Play up your stallion’s strengths, figure out who he’d cross well with, etc.  Do the leg work for your customers, and hopefully it’ll pay off in the long term.

Awesome Again

I agree with a lot of what you said Cat. The only problem with this is that often times the greatest runners aren’t the best in the breeding shed and vice-versa. Let’s take Storm Cat as an example. He is one of the most prolific stallions in the last 30 years but under the rules of this game he wouldn’t have even been close to making it to the breeding shed.

I just worry that these super strict breeding standards could prevent Final Furlong’s Storm Cat from making it to the breeding shed and that seems like such a shame :frowning:
