Famous Races 2023: Dirt

I decided to make just one topic, because there are suprisingly few Grade 1 dirt races over a longer distance. If you have a fast dirt monster, there is some fame & fortune to win!

In 2022, Littlefield won the Dubai World Cup and Travers Stakes with Ch. Strike It Lucky. Black Storm West’s Ch. Local Haunt won Kentucky Derby, and Ch. Victor’s Podium from Starfish Stables won the Preakness. Starfish also won Queen’s Plate Stakes, with Ch. Lap of Honor. Ch. Gifted Detail (Denoux Stud) won Blue Diamond Stakes. Ch. Raindale Raven (Darkwood Stables) won the Jockey Club Gold Cup. My colt Ch. Bong Bong Bong (leased by Starfish Stables) won Belmont Stakes.

So, who’s aiming at the Dubai World Cup 2023?

Pegasus World Cup is added! It will be the richest race in Final Furlong. Among real life possible contenders are Accelerate, Gunnevera, Monomoy Girl, Audible, City of Light and Seeking the Soul.

Here are some videos related to the real life Pegasus World Cup:

I wasn’t expecting the $12 mill purse in FF. Definitely sending at least one (because that entry fee is going to be hefty, too, haha).

Why not make someone very, very rich… (and presumably several someones quite a bit poorer)

Looks a great addition, have shipped two to Gulfstream for it

The big day is coming! Entries for Pegasus World Cup are now open. Will we have a full field?

As for the real life race:

“The field is highlighted by Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Accelerate, a 7-4 favorite in the latest 2019 Pegasus World Cup odds. City of Light, who won the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, is listed at 7-2, while Pennsylvania Derby winner McKinzie is at 8-1 and Breeders’ Cup Classic runner-up Gunnevera is at 19-2.” - CBS Sports

Who’s your favourite? I really like City of Light.

Wow, 9 horses entered already, including Ch. Me Encantaría bred by Clicker Lab. Exciting!

Now at 11 entries, all champion-titled. It’s going to be quite the race!

I’m tempted to enter but my 4 and 5yos are…not brilliant.

Field is now FULL! Commence being nervous for the next few days, haha.

Another interesting Pegasus World Cup contender, Kukulkan (Point Determined x The Real Mayo / Bernardini), Mexican Triple Crown winner:

And he’s attracting attention:

The winner of our first Pegasus World Cup is NCh. Fool To Be Smokin’, the 2021 3yo Colt of the Year and Horse of the Year, closely followed by Ch. Bele, last year’s winner of Breeders’ Cup Classic; both from Starfish Stables. Ch. Ultimate Craving (Coleman Branch) finished 3rd. Track was fast and there was a full field of 14 horses. All champions!

In real life, my favourite City of Light won by 5 lengths! It was a super rainy day.

Seeking the Soul finished 2nd and Accelerate was 3rd.

Some early info about real life Dubai World Cup: 2019 Dubai World Cup (G1). It runs next Saturday. Who’s your favourite?

World Cup is coming! In real life 13 horses are entered, including Seeking the Soul (Perfect Soul) who finished 2nd in Pegasus World Cup recently; North America (Dubawi) who won Al Maktoum Challenge; Yoshida (Heart’s Cry) from Japan; and Thunder Snow (Helmet), who won Dubai World Cup last year and also finished 3rd in Breeders’ Cup Classic.

In the game we have seven horses entered; NCh. Fool To Be Smokin’ (Starfish Stables), the 5yo multi-millionaire winner of Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and Pegasus World Cup; GCh. Bele (Starfish Stables), 4yo Breeders’ Cup Classic and Wood Memorial winner; GCh. Secrets Squared (Starfish Stables), 6yo Florida Derby winner, who won Gr. 2 Strub Stakes by 6 1/4 lengths this year; Ch. Local Haunt (Black Storm West), 3yo Derby specialist - he won Australian Derby, Florida Derby and Kentucky Derby; 6yo Ch. Strike It Lucky (Littlefield), who won Dubai World Cup last year; my colt, 4yo Ch. Bong Bong Bong who won Belmont Stakes last year but finished 4th in the Dubai World Cup; and there is also one filly, 3yo Ch. Troubled Earth (Port Pirie), placed in Gr. 1 Thousand Guineas this year.

I hope even one of my Dubai horses does well (especially Molten Metal, Fivel, and Local Haunt who all need 2-3 more SW’s to be stud qualified), but I fully expect carnage based on how this year has gone so far. Fingers crossed at least half hit the board.

I am happy to see so many FF horses entered, though. We SHOULD be able to at least beat them.

Congratulations, Shelbie! Ch. Local Haunt (Black Storm West) wins the Dubai World Cup. Bele finished 2nd and Strike It Lucky was 3rd.

Kentucky Derby next!! First leg of American Triple Crown.

Thunder Snow wins the Dubai World Cup… again! Gronkowski finished 2nd, just a nose behind him, and Gunnevera was 3rd.

Kentucky Derby is coming!
Entries in Final Furlong are now open, and in real life it’s on the next day.
