Second foal of dam, Thats Not My Point is a tiny 7.1hh bay filly. Both parents are as of yet unproven in the breeding shed, but we’re really optimistic about this foal. Her 1/2 brother, Timbuktu will hit the track next year.
Very pleased that Notanotherhighland didn’t pop until today. She’ll have a date with Long Live the King.
Two more today. Both colts. Are the colts going to have it this year?
Names are still iffy. [color=blue]Crystal Hill WCh. Crystal Rainbow x NCh. Sacred Hill
Huge 9.3hh chestnut colt out of a solid pedigree. Really excited about him.
[color=blue]Holy Cow Holy Bull x Daddys Pride
9.1hh dapple gray colt. Would have worked better if he were a filly, but the sole reason I bred a horse to Holy Bull was to be able to name the foal this. Poor bugger’s stuck with it. =)
True. Generally the fillies have it at the Hill–it’s been a 50/50 split or the fillies winning for every year except last year when the colts took it. I’m sensing they’re aiming for a comeback and I’m going to be up to my neck in colts for the next several years.
We lost a lovely little chestnut filly today. She by FFCh. High Chances and out of GCh. Go For Glory, whom we’ve become really excited about after the performance of her first foal, Ch. Demand the Best, this year. Go For Glory will be rebred back to High Chances in the hopes that next year’s foal will be a live birth.
[color=red]Clarity of Night WCh. Nightfight x Ch. Saturnalia (Planet Hollywod)
Cute grey 8.3hh filly with a whole bunch of blazes where they don’t belong. We’re excited to see what her legs look like once she sheds out…you know how babies change colors. ;-) She’s Saturnalia’s first foal, so we’re super happy Clarity’s healthy…and, you know, alive. Saturnalia is one of our very first homebreds, so it’s always exciting to see how the grandbabies do.
Cute 8.3hh black filly that’s 3/4s to NCh. The Fighting Fifty. Not sure about the name, and she arrived 20 days early. Never Been Kissed will be bred to High Chances in March.
[color=blue]Hubris (FFCh. High Chances x NCh. Gotta Be a Natural)
9.1hh bay colt
This handsome bugger is one we’ve been waiting for since the 2nd. He’s the first foal by talented sprinting mare Gotta Be a Natural. I’m so, so pleased that both dam and foal are doing well. I worry that his name might be a bit of hubris and will come back and bite me in the butt, but why not? Really psyched about this boy.
Sigh… The game seems to be targeting all my nicer horses (paranoid, I know…but 3 out of 4 foals lost of the past several years were out of SW/MSW mares). Anyhoo, I’m just heart broken. Absolutely, absolutely devastated. I hope this is not a sign of things to come.
Do “older” (i.e. 5yo, 6yo, 7yo) maiden mares have a more difficult time foaling? I ask b/c I try to keep my ponies running as long as possible, and it might be worthwhile to change that if I stand a greater chance of losing foal/mare.
Sorry…just really, really disappointed. Random numbers sucks. :-p
No, age of the mare has nothing to do with it. Well, maiden mares (first-time moms) are more likely to foal early/late, and older mares (mid-late teens) who’ve had tons of babies are slightly more likely to die while foaling, I think. Even then, it should still be a very low chance.
