What brand modem?

Hi everyone.

Can someone please reccommend me what brand of wireless modem I should get? My old one is chucking it in. It keeps losing its connection which is REALLY irritating (sometimes get tempted to throw my baby, MacBook Pro but then I realise it isn’t his fault ::)).

My computer apparently has some swanky new-gen wireless capability of 802.11n ( ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ).

Thanks to anyone who can offer advice!

Cheers.

Do you mean wireless router?  Modems usually get provided by your internet service provider these days assuming you’re not on dial-up.  I’m not sure what the benefits of wireless standard n is over the previous (g?) but I suppose if the price difference isn’t huge, getting a “n” compliant router is a good plan.

Dunno what brands you crazy Aussies have, but I like my Netgear router at home.  We swapped to a Linksys for awhile, but it wouldn’t get along well with some of our video game consoles so we’re back to the Netgear.

You could go all-apple and get an airport base station.   (And probably get airport extreme, as well, so you could broadcast music wirelessly as well as internet.)

The non-apple route I’d recommend is Linksys or Netgear.  I’ve got a D-Link router right now, but (Windows :stuck_out_tongue:) computers are finicky about deciding to connect to it.

Well, Linksys has worked well for my dad, who has no wireless connections, but when I tried to set up Linksys with my mom for the laptop, I wanted to break it in half. Everybody seems to like Linksys, so maybe I’m a weird case (which is the case most of the time… ), but I have a serious grudge against Linksys. I tried to set that stupid modem up for literally four hours before trying the modem that AT&T sent to us for getting their internet. AT&T’s modem has been wonderful. No broken connections or anything. Just complete cooperation.

So, I guess I’m biased when it comes to modems, but I hate Linksys…  ;D

Well, then again, I don’t know what works best with Apples too. So, heh. I hope you find a good one.

I hate Linksys, my dad had it and it was the most worthless and frustrating piece of crap ever! Netgear is the one I have and it works great, haven’t had any problems(plus, the one I have is white with sort’ve an apple look, so would match your MacBook  lol unless you have the black MacBook (which btw I’ve heard they charge MORE for for some reason!) Anyway, I definitly wouldn’t recommend Linksys.

Hehe. I got the silver MacBook Pro. I would have loved a black one, but my choice was silver, silver or silver.

Shanthi, the only problem with the Airport Base Station is that Apple are morons (with regards to this product only!) and they didn’t include a ADSL modem in it. So that means I’d have to get a new one anyway. And buying two products doesn’t make sense to me…

Netgear looks good.

Just keep in mind there is no industry standard for n wireless as there is for g. Your n should be backward compatible with a g router, but might have minor issues with different n routers. If your going to pay 3k for a laptop I’d get the manufactures recommendation. At least you have someone to b… at if things didn’t work right

True.

The guy at the electronics shop said to get a D-Link because that is what my ISP provides on sign-up. But I have a D-Link one now and it drives me bonkers.

If only the AirPort had a built-in modem!

The guy at the electronics shop :astonished: :stuck_out_tongue: So you’re not buying an airport extreme base station?

Why you shocked about the guy at the electronics shop? LOL.

The problem with the AirPort Extream is that it doesn’t have a built-in modem. You have to attach your own. Which (in principle) irritates me to no end. I don’t see the point in getting something that reduces clutter and wires, but then having to add another product with a connecting wire.

So yeah, I’m just after a new modem…

I’m shocked that anyone would listen to a guy in an electronics store
