Weeee! Sam's going back to School!

cough  Ok, so most people would not be thrilled with this, but I’m waaaay so excited.  XD  I graduated high school in '02 and tried college the August after that.  Big time burnout.  I was going from 8 a.m. till 9:30 at night with a 30 minute drive to and from and a two hour break between a couple of the classes.  So, I quit.  Which did not thrill my family and they’ve been at me to go back ever since.  Problem is, I’m a full-time supervisor at a clothing store and tend to work really weird hours.  Like today, I worked 3-8, and tomorrow I work 8-5, while later in the week I’m pulling a couple of 1-9 shifts.  So school really wasn’t feasible if I wanted to continue to be able to pay my bills and keep full time status (and thus, insurance) at work.

Anyways, due to a number of frustrations at work, I started looking into going to school online about a week ago.  Spoke to an admissions advisor at a university that offers degrees completely online (and they’re accredited, which was the main thing I was worried about with an online school) and they also have campuses if I ever needed to go for some strange reason or other.  Filled out my FAFSA forms and got a Pell grant and a Stafford loan that will cover the majority of my stuff.  Then, I find out that in order to get in in the Summer B sessions, which start August 31, I’ll have to take three different tests if my transcripts don’t get there in time.  Well, I told the lady my math grades were never that great in high school anyways, so I might as well take the tests.  I took the Reading and Writing ones this past Tuesday and aced the reading test.  That was no big deal, it was easy, and as much as I read, was really just a fun test for me to take.  Then, Wednesday, I took the math test.  Scary!  I always hated math in high school and had not looked at algebra since before I graduated.  I passed!  So now, all I’m waiting on is the writing test scores, which I hopefully did well on.  Either way, I’m so happy!  dance  I plan on getting my business degree.  By the time I finish, hopefully stuff around here will have picked up enough that I can find me a better job.  :D

Congrats, that sounds exciting!  I hope you get a pass on the writing and enjoy classes once they start.

Congratulations! I work in retail as well, the inconsistent hours are awful. :frowning: Do you plan to use your degree to move up within the company, or pursue other career options altogether?

Either way, good luck!

Hehe…thanks y’all!

Part of what made me decide to go back to school was that we were recently informed that supervisor was as high up as we’d ever be allowed to go.  So I said, “Well then, I’ll get my degree and be done with this place.”  There’s no incentive to work as hard as we do when there’s no light at the end of the tunnel.  :stuck_out_tongue:  I plan on concentrating on small business management, cause I’d really like to have my own business.  Now whether I’m able to do that or not, I don’t know, but I can dream, right?
