The year that was - How'd you do 2028?

Inspired by @Hilda_with_Clicker’s topic last year around this time where I greatly enjoyed reading about everyone’s FF year I thought it’d be fun to reflect on 2028 and look ahead to the year of racing that is 2029.

In 2027, Gotapa ended with horses hitting the track 723 times with an OTB of 58%. As that OTB was a slight setback from 2026, this year I really focussed on finding the right races for horses. I also did a lot more last minute entering, giving horses that I felt needed a confidence booster a smaller field to run against to feel what it was like in the winners circle. It paid off in 2028 as our fourth year of Final Furlong will go in the books as the most succesful one so far with 827 races, a winners ratio of 36% and an OTB ratio of a whopping 71%. Additionally, we made 15,5 million - as much as our first three race years combined.

I had a significant lull in activity over the summer and thus lots of horses benefitted from an unplanned 3-4 month rest period. My focus on winning percentages also meant that I was less active in stakes races in the first half of 2028, which, looking back, wasn’t the best for some of our horses.

In 2028 the first Gotapa homebreds also hit the track! I made the rookie mistake of sending them off to the track for training too soon and discovered in April when races started that most of them had not grown into their projected heights yet. It led to a crop that was wildly succesful in their first races (probably because they’d trained more than anyone) with varying levels of succes after and lots of them had to go back to the barn for months to grow some more. We ended the year with a crop of 27 with 24 winners and 6 stakes winners.

As for standouts, we admittedly profited from smaller BC and BS fields. Homebred Antari took home two BS races and became my first MSW homebred ever. Ch. Pugilist won the Breeders’ Cup Mile on turf and had a stellar year in general. Some of the standouts from 2027, mostly Solid Sun and Golden Chrome continued to perform solidly in 2028. We also had 17 horses win a single stakes this year, so hopefully there are a few in there that will continue to run well in stakes in 2029.

I’m still working towards campaigning our first GCh. from NW1 to title and definitely don’t have any significant stallion prospects to speak of yet. I’m very happy with the increasing quality of my horses though, so some day we’ll get there. I hope that everything will continue to go well in 2029 and who knows, with my increasing wallet I might just be able to snatch up a stallion if one ever comes up for sale or auction and explore that part of the game too.

Thank you all for yet another fun year in the game! For all it’s ups and downs and unplanned bugs, I still have a lot of fun playing. Happy new year to you all and good luck with FF in 2029!

After a stellar couple of years we dropped back a bit with a lower win % which reflected as a lower OTB %

I had focused on racing more, sending more horses further afield to fill more races - probably didn’t work out as well as I’d hoped along with starting my 2yr olds earlier. Still happy with the result.

Can’t find that elusive stallion either having to retire a number who got close - probably my most frustrating aspect thus far!

I love the distraction this game provides and am always thankful that Shanthi persists with us all :joy:

Much higher win percentage a big improvement. Earnings lower probably down to very few runners at Breeders Cup

A very disappointing year for Starfish Stables.

This was our least productive year (purse money wise) since FF Year 2015.

Due to the fact that we had a spell where we didn’t have any runners for about 2 months as a result of RL issues, we had only three-quarters as many runners as the previous year. We didn’t have any horses qualified for the BC or BS races, probably the first year in a long time we haven’t. Our Stakes horses were very disappointing, and we only had 50% of our 2YO’s winning, with only 1 2YO SW.

We experimented with a change in workout routine part-way through the year but it doesn’t look like that helped very much, if at all. Because we had some horses using the old routine and some using the new one, it was very difficult to figure out which routine worked better. We’re thinking that we might go back to changing all of the horses back to the old routine, although, with 430 racehorses, that’s going to take forever to do.

Allegro Thoroughbreds had a great year! We got our record earnings, almost doubling what we did last year. We also had 57% OTB, our highest percentage year to date, along with a 17% win percentage. We do have to give some credit to Sakura Springs for allowing us to lease a bunch of their horses (thank you!), some of which did well for us in the Breeders Cup/Series.

This is also our third year having homebreds to race. We ended up with 38% 2yo homebred winners, along with 2 stakes wins, which was really exciting. We have been slowly working on building up the quality of our horses and it’s starting to pay off. I’m really excited about our up and coming foal crop, and am hoping to improve our homebred stats as time goes on. After 9 years of playing this game we still aren’t anywhere close to getting our first stud qualified horse, but hopefully it will happen eventually.

I had a lot of fun playing FF this year, even despite the surprise bugs throughout the year. This game has been such a big part of my life and being able to escape from reality, and I really appreciate all that Shanthi does to keep it up and running for us. Here’s to a great 2029!

First third of the year was BAD after trying out a new workout schedule. Just total carnage, and I think those numbers definitely impacted our year-end statistics. After switching to an old but reliable schedule, things started looking up.

We did enjoy 4 Breeders’ Cup winners, including winning the BC SC Endurance for the third year in a row. Death Eater retired to stud, bringing our stallion number to an insane 11 strong. I played for YEARS before I could even lease a stallion, so to now stand 11 (with 4 being homebreds, and 2 we purchased as babies and campaigned since day 1) is a great thrill.

First Crop Stallion Highlights

We did two big herd purges and it now feels easier to keep track of everyone. I say as we acquired 90-something new two year olds with the new year.
