The Outcomes

"…Going once…going

twice…sold, to the girl in the white shirt! No, not

you, the one that’s jumping around!"

Laura swore she’d

always remember those words.

“5”, Jackie kept muttering. "5. We had to borrow Casey’s

two trailers to haul the other four! And you had to buy the

weanling! What if she takes after Stella, huh? Then what are we going to do? And by the

way, I can’t believe how many times you changed that yearlings name! It’s gonna be

permanent soon! And what are you changing the weanlings name too? 'Cause I know you are,

and you’re thinking about it right now! And that means you’re ignoring me!"

Laura

was ignoring her. She would rename the black weanling, who had

been sold as Hellbound, to Spirited Away. That was, if the name wasn’t taken already, but

she’d have to look at the registry later. Right now, she was unloading five prospects, and

one young one.

“Ok, here comes the weanling. We’ll call him Spirit”, Laura said as she

carefully lowered the colt down. He was beautiful, but that didn’t matter. He had already

been weaned from his mother’s milk, so no need to worry about that!

"Put him in with

Stella."

“Oh, no! Well, don’t blame me when…”

"Jackie, he’ll be fine! Yo,

Casey, a hand?"

Laura’s middle school pal and her still true-blue bud, Casey, sauntered

over. “Jacks, he’ll be fine! C’mon, little boy,” Casey said as she led the colt to

Stella’s paddock.

“Ok, bring my favorite out!”

“Laura, which one?”

"Coscoroba,

of course!"

Jackie unloaded the 3 y/o filly. Laura sighed and wrapped her arms around

Coscoroba’s neck.

"I’m soo glad I was the only one bidding on you, girl. You and

Universal will get along fine, I promise!"

Coscoroba nuzzled Laura’s auburn hair and

blew softly. Jackie watched, knowing there was an attatchment between the girl and her

filly.

“Ok, Casey! Uh, Casey?”

Looking over, Laura saw Casey, standing grumpily as

Stella galloped around with Spirit’s lead rope dangling from her mouth. The little colt was

enjoying all of it.

Jackie looked smug. “What’d I tell you?”

"Oh, just unload the

bay!"

“And his name would be…?”

"Tripped Too Fast. A.k.a Prince, 'cause he sure

acts like one!"

Indeed, the mahogony bay colt stepped out onto the mountain as if Reina

Meadows was his kingdom. With a toss of his head, Prince let out a neigh, and an answer came

from the trailer as Laura then emerged with the dark bay filly, Top Secret.

"Ok, then.

She’ll go in the paddock next to Coscoroba. I think Casey finally has Stella under control.

Coscoroba’s in the paddock, and in case you didn’t notice, she’s got Prince. He’s going

in the paddock next to Universal’s. And Spirit’s all set…and who’s that?"

"Did you

forget?" Laura laughed, “This is SinisterPass. A.k.a Sinni.”

“Sinni?”

"Hey, it’s

catchy!"

The brown colt tossed his head and went up on his hindlegs. Laura turn him in a

circle, forrcing him down.

“Whoa, fiesty! He’s 3, right?”

“Yep”, Laura answered

Jackie as she led the colt to the paddock by Secret. After he was set, Laura went to

Universal. He was cantering about, snorting and nickering at all the new arrivals. And Dark

Side could care less. The broodmare just grazed, she probobly wouldn’t stop if a dragon

came in and started blowing up the barns. But Laura watched the chestnut colt as he sniffed

noses with Coscoroba, a fellow chestnut.

“Hello boy, so many new smells, huh?” Laura

asked the colt as Coscoroba squealed and trotted around, tail high. Universal watched her

and nickerd.

“I smell love, boy! And it’s coming from both directions, isn’t it?” the

girl asked her colt as he watched the filly flirt. If they thought of each other while

racing, maybe they would win…

claps Aww, that was way

cute. Congrats on all your new arrivals.

Thanx a bunch, I hope they

do well, but Secret was injured in her last race… << Oh well, I’m really excited!! ^^

Laura hopped out of the truck

and fairly skipped to the back of the trailer. Her best friend Casey, the barn manager,

suddenly bolted out of the office in the racehorse barn and sprinted out to the driveway.

“Well?”, she asked.

Laura merely smiled. "Get those stud books out, we’ll

be needing them!"

Casey’s jaw dropped. “You, bought, a stallion? How much?”

“10k. Not too bad. His name is Rumor Has It, and he’s champion status!”

Casey grinned. “Where’s Jackie? Not still at the auction?”

"Yep. She’s

bidding on a filly that caught my eye. I’ve just come to get Mateo settled and then I’ll

be heading back to the auction."

“Mateo?” Casey sighed. "You nickname every horse

with a registered name of more then three syllables, don’t you?"

"You know me too

well."

Laura suddenly jumped as she heard a bugle come from the trailer. Universal,

Sinni, and Prince all snorted and stomped thier hooves while Coscoroba and Secret started

prancing. Laura laughed as she lowered the ramp.

A tall, pure black stallion stood

there, his head turned and nostrils flared. Laura replaced the safety tie with his very own

lead rope. Casey undid the tailgate, and Rumor Has It(Mateo) stepped out onto the

mountaintop.

The first thing he did was rear. He pricked his ears at the paddocks by

the racehorse barn. Universal and Sinni stood together, looking rather grumpy at the new

competition. Secret and Coscoroba were prancing around, and the yearling and the weanling,

Stella and Spirit, could care less.

Laura led the stallion to the stud barn. After

tying him outside her stall, she felt her cell vibrate in her pocket. Quickly tying Mateo

up, she fished out her cellular and saw it was Jackie.

“Yea?”

"It’ll be a

bit 'till she sells, but it’s been quiet."

“How’s Hermione?”

"She’s just

standing, looking at everyone. She’s been nuzzling my pockets. Alot."

Laura

laughed. “Well, I’ll be there soon.”

“Ok. See ya.”

“Bye.”

Laura

hung up and removed the travling blanket and the wraps. After the stallion was groomed, he

was turned out into his own, personal paddock.

Spirit suddenly reared, as if to say,

“Hey, I’m the lead stallion here! Wanna piece of me? Huh? Huh?” The little weanling

flailed his spindly legs as he looked at was practically a bigger version of him.

Laura gave all the horses a quick hug and a carrot before hopping back into the

truck. The excercise riders were just arriving to start evening workouts.

And as

Laura drove off back to the auction, she felt happier then she had ever been. Well, almost.

Laura couldn’t believe how

long she had been at the auction. But it had been worth it!

Once again, Laura drove the truck up the steep road, right up to the mountaintop.

The

excercise riders were already arriving for noon workouts. Laura spotted the fillies being

led from thier paddocks to the barn, while the colts waited 'till after lunch.

Hopping out of the truck, Laura spotted Casey running at them like a maniac.

"Oooo, guess what happend in the 6th book! It was sooo

sad!"

"The 6th book of Harry Potter? I know, I know, but don’t spoil it for Jackie,

she hasn’t read it yet!"

Just then, Jackie clambered out from the passenger seat and

began to lower the ramp. “Spoil what?”

"Nothing, Jackie. But, Casey, speaking of

Harry Potter…"

Laura entered the trailer, and soon led a tall, dark bay filly with

a stunning blaze down the ramp. “Her name is Hermione.”

Casey squealed, "Ooooo, this

is cool!"

Laura looked at her and sighed, "Well, let’s just hope she runs as

magically as the character she is named for performs spells and what-not."

"I think

it’s a sign", Jackie exclaimed, “I mean, we spent, uhhh…”

Casey looked her over,

“You spent what?”

"Uhhh, well, I didn’t

mean to go that high, and, well, she was looking at me funny!"

Jackie pointed at the filly, whom Laura was leading to the racehorse barn.

How much did you spend?” Casey thundered.

“Uhhh, maybe, 20k, no, more, uhhh, $32,500.”

“Oh no.” And Casey collapsed

on the gravel.

Laura sighed as she tied Hermione outside her new stall. As she

unwrapped her tail, she relized just how little the stable had. They were lucky that Prince

and Coscoroba were already entered in thier races, along with Top Secret the following race

day. They were just lucky, but spending money on entry fees was

going to be tight. As she put the tail wrapping back in it’s place, she wondered if her

stable would ever match the big ones.

“Oh, yes it will!”, she murmered to herself,

"And I’m not complaining, Hermione, don’t get me wrong, I like having a small stable. I

know my horses better. I just wish we had more money. But don’t we all?"
Hermione

turned her head, and Laura swore she detected a twinkle in her eye.

Laura suddenly

relized that it didn’t matter. The only time money makes you happy is when it buys you a

horse. And Laura couldn’t argue with that! 8)

cute!
