The Black...Is Back!

I’m sure many of you remember the television serious, The Adventures of the Black Stallion. It aired in 1990 - 1993. I was still really young at the time and I only remember so many of the episodes. We had some on tape and for a while the Outdoor Life Network showed a bunch of the episodes.

Well now 16 YEARS after it first aired the first season is FINALLY available on DVD! My mom and I were christmas shopping at wal-mart a few weeks back and I saw it and almost died on the spot. I LOVED this show as a kid, had a crush on Richard Ian Cox who played Alex Ramsey.

My mom bought it for me for Christmas and I’ve been watching it ever since. In every single episode the plot is CRAZY and the show is really corny but I love it all the same. The racing visuals are very realistic…no Wildfire (ABC Family) type show where every scene is a different race being run.

I do seriously love the plots though…some are REALLY crazy like…the Black is DQ’d from a race because he injested chocolate. Or when Napolean gets kicked and for some reason they are worried about spasmodic COLIC?! Some great ones in their for our general entertainment.

Now that I’ve been talking about it I’m going to have to go back and watch some more of the black! One of my favorite parts of the show is the theme video/song, ‘We Know The Wind’.

Ah the memories of childhood!  ;D

lol omg that’s awesome! I remember that show and the wierdest thing is I was just thinking about it a couple of days ago-I’ll have to keep my eyes open for it and pick it up for myself…maybe even re-read the whole black stallion series! Oh fun!

You mention the Black being DQ’d for eating chocolate.
That is not far-fetched.  Depending on the chocolate, it can have caffeine.  Caffeine is a STIMULANT.  Therefore a No-No.

This last summer, I had one of my horses drink some of my mocha.  I was lucky I didn’t win and had to go to the test barn.  It very well could have been a “positive” test and I would have been fined and possibly lose the win.

I am new to real life racing and there are alot of things that you think are innocent, that can get you in trouble.

Here is another one.
Horse gets bit by spiders or flies and breaks out in huge numbers of bumps all over the body.  Well, it was an allergic reaction.  I gave several doses of Benadryl over a weeks time.  I found out from the state vet at the track, that there is a 30 day withdrawal time.  The antihistime can act as a masking agent for other “drugs”.
Glad it happened the day after she had a huge win for me and that she would have several wks off to rest.

Some things might sound far-fetched but they are in place for a reason.

Yes, chocolate could get a horse DQ’d but the horse would have to be given at least one candy bar a day for 8 days before it would show up on a test. In the episode the Black was given one candy bar a few days before the race. By the time the drug test was given the theobromine would already have started to leave his system.

Now that I think of it this actually was a more realistic episode compared to some of the others in the 1st season. It’s what I get for actually knowing about horses and horse racing.  :stuck_out_tongue:

too weird i came across my home recorded tape of the two movies today , and now i see this post , ill have to go look for the DVD;s as my daughter is as horse crazy as her mom!!
thanks for the heads up, im going to keep my eye out that will make an awesome bday gift for her.

Where did you get the series?

I’ve been watching Wildfire (for the horses , the teen angst is rather sickening) now that they’ve started a new season, and it is so much fun to laugh at.  I’ve forgotten at this point where Wildfire’s origins were pre-being a prison camp horse, but I just love how they’re trying to make him a modern version of The Black.  Except, of course, that he’s not a wild stallion who’s never been touched by friendly people, and he is a racehorse in training, and should act like it, instead of doing stupid things like rearing/bolting when a tv news van drives up to the stable parking lot and honks its horn.  ::)  And never mind all the other general stupidity that occurs every 30 seconds on the show.  Like I said, hilarious to poke fun at.

Is Wildfire worth sitting down to watch?  I’m tempted to each time I pause on ABC family to watch the trailer for it while I’m on my way to USA or TNT for Law & Order.

If you’re not a huge fan of Law & Order, sure.  I like it because it’s so completely mindless, so when my brain’s fried from work/coding, I don’t have to bother to think when I watch Wildfire.  The “plot” each week seems to basically be a Huge Dramatical Event in each of the characters’ lives, plus a few scenes of Wildfire either being completely awesome for Kris (the main character), or being completely stupid for no reason (see horn honking above).

I watched one episode and the angst to horse ratio was too high for me to watch another episode.  And that’s rather sad, since I watch Grey’s Anatomy every week, much to my husband’s disgust.

Off topic but whoo-hoo go Grey’s!!! And yay for Izzy finally depositing the nearly 9 million dollar check! I’m such an addict of Grey’s Anatomy…its getting pathetic but I can’t stop.

My new addiction is House…Hugh Laurie is awesome.  Sadly, since discovering House, Grey’s Anatomy seems so insanely angst-filled and silly (which I suppose is the point, but still…).  I’ll probably keep watching just to laugh at it, but some of the magic is gone.

Grey’s is disgustingly addicting, but you have to love it!  It’s really hilarious, a person can walk down the hallway of my college res. hall during Grey’s and not miss a word, because all the doors are open and everyone is watching it .

I liked that Wildfire was about racing until it became totally centered around the dramatic teen’s life. When those commercials come on, saying “WHO WILL SHE CHOOSE?” I have to laugh. Sorry, I used to like the show, but it became a tad crazy.

I don’t really watch House or Grey’s. In fact, I don’t watch much TV.

I am a huge “The Black” fan… i’ve read that series sooo many times and i remember when they made it into movies and used that sissy boy who was sooo NOT like Alex from the movies…Then(years later)i cought a couple of the episodes with Richard Ian Cox and i loved it…Wish i oculd of watched more but then it went off air…I also jsut saw it at Wal Mart so guess whats on my list of have to haves as soon as i have some money, lol…

I’m still watching the marathon of episodes they had a couple of weeks ago, and yes the “OMG MATT VS. JUNIOR WHO WILL IT BE???” thing is pretty old.
