Suffolk Downs Takes A Stand

Against Slaughter, they still have kinks to work out but check it out.

It’s about time, i hate the fact they just kill them like the poor greyhounds, it makes me sick and i cry when i think about it, and we have lived in many countries and ive seen horsemeat for sale and i wanted to throw up right then and there. i was so upset i had to leave the store!!!

Speaking of greyhounds, I’ve heard that Revere (I believe that’s the township-thingy) is thinking of closing and possibly demolishing the dog track as well. Apparently they’ve been trying for years to add virtual betting & the like, but the state has an anti-casino type policy. Both are a HUGE step in the right direction… I’m starting to love Mass…

theres a big track near here and they have annual greyhound adoption drives, my dog is part greyhound and shes so great shes like one of my kids, they have such a mellow personality when not running after something. lol

What’s a step in the right direction? demolishing the greyhound track?  ??? ??? What’s your reasoning behind that?

They are worse than TB owners when it comes to getting rid of “stock” that doesn’t perform the way they want, they just put em down, there is an extremely high destroy rate among greyhound racing, or had been up until the people that decided to save them by having adoptions and greyhound rescue leagues. I love all animals and it kills me when i have to have a pet put down (no i don’t support peta!!!) and yet it is an option for some animals we have to consider, but the destruction of a healthy animal because it doesn’t win win win, is a disgrace. They have to revamp the system or get rid of it altogether!!

Yes, sorry Andy.  There is very little regulation in Thoroughbreds, but there is even less for Greyhounds, which makes them even more precarious from a pro-animal standpoint. And, there is very little $$ in the industry to support the well-being of the animals, even if they’re successful. I agree w/ you totally Grace; there is no reason to destroy a perfectly healthy animal that has simply outlived it’s human-appointed purpose.

Do you have stats on that or is it just your opinion  ??? ever been to the dispersal sales for TBs? you know where they go don’t you?

I’m not denying perfectly healthy dogs (and horses) are destroyed but it’s folly to say one is better than the other.

Written and spoken by someone who has owned / trained & bred greyhounds  I also currently have 4 retired ‘pets’ in the backyard.

One won 15 races (track record - 4 ‘city’ races)
another won 7 before breaking down, has had 2 litters and is growing old gracefully @ 11 years old
1 who won 1 race (injury prone) but has great personality
sister to above who was just plain ‘slow’ but she didn’t know it  ;D

Should have commented on the story before I got on my high horse  ;D, it’s an admirable stance to take but it’s nearly unworkable and impossible to enforce.
