OK…so I’m not quite sure where I found it, and I’m a bit too lazy to search for it for hours, so could someone just give me a quick recap on Speed Figures in the race results, and how they factor in to training/picking races etc?
My new project pony, Weyoun, won his NW2 Allowance $35K with a 126 SF. Looking through his race record, the higher the purse in the Allowance, the higher his SF was, wether he hit the board or not. The lower the purse, his SF dropped dramatically.
As far as I know the code for speed figures is still broken, so speed figures should be ignored until Shanthi says otherwise because they are all wacky and will lie to you.
I don’t think they’re broken, actually. (And now that race margins have been fixed, they’re a lot more accurate!) But they shouldn’t be treated as gospel, either. All they tell you is how fast the winning horse was in a race compared to the average speed for that distance/surface. So if your horse is in a race where the winner finishes 10 seconds faster than the average, all the horses in that race will get a higher-than-normal SF. If your horse wins, the SF can be a decent way to tell how good they are compared to the average. If your horse doesn’t win, their SF is calculated based on how far behind the winner they were.
There’s a more detailed explanation in the FAQ. (Though I’m not sure if the “good scores” chart has any meaning any more, since the numbers were wacky for quite a long while.)
