Well, when I started the game, and I picked what horses I wanted to start with, I picked a racehorse and a broodmare (don’t know if that was so smart now… ). My broodmare, Kelly Do, I know nothing about (as in, did her parents/grandparents produce good foals… did any relative race good) because I can’t click on them. I figured, I’m a newbie, so I should start with a simple cheap stally. Someone also PMed me this advice, and I firgured it was reasonable. So I bred Kelly Do to Backseat Driver, as he is an easy, cheap stally since I don’t have much money yet. (I would provide links but this library computer has issuses) Is there any chance my 2011 foal will do good? Did I make a good choice?
Not questions that I must have answers for, but I’d just like some wisdom from the experienced.
You can’t research your mare’s family because it doesn’t exist in the game. She was randomly generated, like every horse that new members get.
Backseat Driver could be a good stud, but we won’t know until next year when his foals start racing. Worst case scenario, the foal’s going to cost you ~10k in upkeep (i.e. taxes) before it can race, so if the foal earns more than that for you on the track, then you’ve done well.
Hrm… with that, maybe I should pick a stally that has had good foals and wait to breed to Backseat Driver until I’ve seen his foals race? I’ll try it. Thanks Shanthi!
Actually the stallion you picked is a good choice. He has a solid record and excellent bloodlines. Picking a broodmare as one of your starting horses is neither bad nor nor good. It’s just one way to go. Many of us started with one horse. So starting with only one racer now should not be a major handycap. Good luck and have fun that’s waht this game is all about.
Glad you guys are optimistic about him. I’m curious to see how he does, Pardon Me was a great broodmare and Cross Roads has been pretty consistent, but we’ll just have to wait and see how well that passes on to their grand-foals.
I have a couple of questions about breeding and would be grateful for some help, please.
I have a 4yo mare, Back Streets, that I plan to retire to stud. I know that you must wait one month after a mare has foaled before breeding her again, but anted to know if there was a waiting period after a mare has last raced before breeding her. I am trying to decide on a stallion to send her to and want to breed her sometime in mid- to end of February so that she will foal sometime in January. Once I’ve selected a stallion and date and confirmed it with the Stud Farm, can I continue racing her until shortly before the breeding date?
You must wait a day after retiring to breed a mare, and 7 days to retire a stud.
And yes, you can continue racing until you decide to breed. (Though - not to bring up a painful subject - in that case you will pay racehorse and broodmare upkeep fees on her, since she was used for both.)
