I have a 3yo filly that I claimed earlier this year who is extremely slow to recover energy. It doesn’t seem to matter if she’s resting at the farm or boarding at a course. I’m trying to work out if she’s immature or if I’m running her in the wrong races/with incorrect equipment etc. She’s had 8 starts this year and won or placed 2nd in 7 of them so when her energy is high she runs well. She was racing and boarding at the farm over the summer then shipped out in August. She’s had three starts since then and has been at the boarding farm for 21 days since her last race and only come up to D energy today. I’m happy to ship her home, I’m just looking for suggestions as she’s very slow to recover even when back at the barn. I don’t work her or race her unless she’s A for energy. Thoughts welcome
Horses gain between 5-25 points of energy per day. If she’s at/close to the 5pt end it would take her 20 days to regain 100 point of energy, but if she used up more than 100 points of energy in her last race, it’ll take even longer.
If she runs well when energised I’d send her to the farm (boarding or home) for a month between races. She’ll also regain energy at the track, too, so if you’ve used up all your boarding days at one location you could just leave her at the track (but not working out) to get her energy back. (I’d send her to a farm after that next race, though, so that she could regain morale as well.)
Looks like a nice filly. I’m guessing that one 7th was a fluke off day.
