Not such a great Christmas for us here at Oakwood Farms, after being pensioned earlier this year, our mare Kelly King had to be euthanized at about 1AM on Christmas morning. She had coliced on the 23rd and was rushed into surgery late that night. She made it through the surgery but we were told her chances were not good, things came to a head late on Christmas eve and the decision was made to euthanize her. She was only 17.
Sorry to hear that. 
It’s tough to lose them, regardless of age/career.
Sorry for your loss We own one of her daughters, Kelly’s Classic, who will be delivering her first foal next year and is one of our favorites.
