Retire???

Pacific Popsicle 8yo - he did great last year for me but hasn’t ran well in five starts this season
I’m only in my second season in the game and it looks to me like retirement looms. But second opinion from another player would be nice

Also wondering the same about Genosha

Joe

Wow, he made almost $900K as a 7yo? That’s remarkable. Time to retire him though, definitely. :-\

I would try throwing Genosha back into Allowance races a couple more times to see how it goes. If he doesn’t race well, retire him too.

Horses are generally over the hill by age 7. The fact that they both had good 7yo seasons is impressive, but that may have something to do with the fact that they’re creates.

I would retire them both and give the old men plenty of carrots for a job well done.

As a general rule of thumb, if a horse who has a history of doing consistently well fails to hit the board over a period of 4-6 months and nothing has perked it up (equipment, jockey, distance, surface changes, etc.) then it’s probably safe to assume it is over the hill and ready for retirement.

Thanks for the advice, will retire them both now. Need to put some extra carrots on the shopping list

I agree.  Time for Pop to switch careers to lead pony and lawn ornament

I’m indifferent about retirements.  My boy Noteasybeingreen ( finalfurlong.org/viewhorse.php?horse=1182) is a great example of a horse who had a completely fullfilling career from 2yo-10yo.  He had some up’s and down’s that you can see but he just kept on truckin and actually had his best year as a 9yo and won 2013 SC HOTY.  If they got it they got it. It just takes you knowing your horse and playing them to the best of their ablility.  A perfectly played over the hill horse may run better than a poorly played horse in their prime.
