Random Question about Polo with a long story...lol

Hi there,

So, I’m a horse person in real life, but my experience is mostly w/ dressage and a touch of hunters, but I know very little about polo… So here’s the story… but please, enlighten me about polo. Polo ponies are pretty expensive, no?

I have this 4 y/o TB filly for sale that I’m trying to sell in Upstate NY, and I realize she’s not perfect (she has a crooked right front foot and a parrotmouth), which is reflected in her price-tag ($1200 negotiable).  But, she’s very pretty and has a killer daisy cutter trot. I’ve been trying to sell her as a family-type horse with potential for local shows only.

Here’s where polo comes in: this guy from the Hamptons emails me after seeing a photo ad of her and tells me he’ll offer me $900 for her and he hauled up yesterday w/ a horse trailer to see her (at my parent’s place).  He wouldn’t take her because her right front toes out, (but it doesn’t affect her movement, and with trimming, it’s manageable) and is pissed that he’s out the $$ for the fuel. Now, currently I don’t have any sympathy for him. Am I right in believing that? LOL.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but $900 is cheap for any horse, no? He never told me he was looking for a polo pony, and frankly, I wouldn’t have agreed to sell her as a polo pony (I’ve only heard negatives about it, which is why I’m asking about it…)
I feel like he was looking for a cheap ‘steal’ as a resale project.

Am I being insane?

I don’t know much about polo ponies, having only worked with ex-ponies, but I would imagine good ones are pretty pricey (esp. compared to $1,200)…they need to be speedy, agile, and pretty bombproof to deal with the game.  Not to mention easy to ride.

And if the guy’s pissed that he spent money on fuel, he shouldn’t have showed up with his trailer.  Presumably he knew how far he was going and how much it’d cost before he walked out the door.  (I assume) it’s not like you said “hey, show up with your trailer and I might not sell you the filly”.

Since he said he was bringing the trailer, I assumed it was a pretty done deal, actually.  And I’ve had her for sale for a long enough time with just ‘tire-kickers’ (so to speak), that I’m about 40% ready to give her away.
To top it off, it wasn’t a ‘tiny rig’ either… A 6 horse w/ big diesel dually.
He sent me this nasty email last night too… I was soo mad!

My good friend actually works with Polo Ponies (she tends to 4-10 at any given time) and she wouldn’t do it if there were any negative aspects to it. They’re actually in a tournament this weekend. Sure, it’s a very demanding and strenuous event, but it’s not neglectful or anything (of course, anything can become that with the wrong people…)

That guy sounds like he was looking for a cheap steal and I wouldn’t even look at any of his emails if he’s going to act so immaturely :-\

Uhhh, yeah… not really sure what on earth he’d have to blame you for… “This horse you have for sale for $1,200 and are marketing as good for local shows only is not conformationally perfect and I drove my truck and trailer up there to see her for no good reason now”?  Seriously?

The guy sounds like an idiot. From what you say you were fairly honest in your appraisal of the horse and the price reflected that.

What more did he expect? If he was worried why haul the trailer up in the first place, why not come for an inspection and if suitable make arrangements to get her transported or next week etc.

just ignore the flip.
