I know that colts are supposed to win at least 10 stakes races before they can become studs, but I was going through some of the newer studs and found some that had only won 1 stakes race and had no injuries listed. I was wondering if there were other conditions that allowed colts to become studs without meeting the 10 stakes race minimum. Thanks.
I’m assuming they became studs before that rule was implemented.
Yes, the 10-win rule was implemented about 3 years ago, I think. Previously the qualifications were 1 graded Stakes win, or 3 ungraded Stakes wins. So there will still be a fair number of studs who do not meet today’s qualifications (but were still qualified to stand at stud at the time).
Thanks for clearing that up for me.
