Question on Race Record

Sorry if I seem a little dense but I’ve been wondering for a while.

On the race records of most of the horses it says something like-

Starts: 16(15), or firsts: 2(1) what does the number in parentheses mean?

the number in the parenthesis is how many stakes races they have run. The 2 (1) is how many they won.

A slightly more detailed answer…

16(15) indicates that the horse has raced in 16 races, 15 of which are stakes races. So a 2(1) for 1sts would tell you the horse has won twice, including one stakes.

thanks
