If you do not already own a pony, don’t even think about buying one! >:( You would think that at 32" and 150lbs she’d be pretty easy to work with but wow! She kept pulling back when I tied her up (she will be 2 in april and was first tied at 4 months and never has done this) and reared up a few times so I untied her and held her myself. She ended up taking off towards the road (small = fast!) and I barely managed to stop her before she hit the pavement! And then she fought me so hard she broke the brass snap on her halter right off!
And to add insult to injury she totally rolled in a pile of poo when I put her up. And she was wet!
Took me hours to find a decent rope halter for her, and now she’s halter-less for a couple of weeks until it comes in. We will be working hard on tying and an absolute ‘WHOA!’ when it comes in though!
Hey my horse didn’t like being tied when I got him. I got a new nylon halter for him, a chain attachment for the lead rope and a strong nylon rope lead. I ran the chain through the side square metal piece close to the nose on his halter, under his chin, through the other square piece on the other side and up the cheek of the halter and clipped it to the “o” ring that the crown piece is attached to. He quickly figured out that when he pulled back it wasn’t comfortable and would release it by himself. I now just tie him with a piece of rope that I run through the square piece by the nose up the cheek through the o ring, over his poll, through the other o ring and square piece and tie the two ends under his chin. I clip the lead to the knot then tie him to whatever I want. Not sure if this has been used before but it worked for my horse and only needed to be used once. Good luck with your pony!
Well what gets me is that she’s been tied since she was 3-4 months old with no problem, and yesterday she decided she was going to freak out and pull. It’s definitely something we will be working on, though, and I’m going to keep that idea in mind if she decides that she can’t be tied anymore. I’m just waiting for her new halter to get in lol. I had to go custom order one so it’ll be a few weeks. Smart me
