Police Dogs

Ok sorry guys I know this isn’t horses, and I know nobody knows this.  But 2 weeks ago I started working at a Training Kennel.  Doing an apprenticeship.  The guy that does the training trains poluce dogs, and well starting monday I get to watch a handler course for a bunch of police departments.  I’m real excited.  Today we tested a dog that is going to be a police dog that came from Europe and she did real good.  It’s hard work but I’m loving it.

That is sooo very cool… How did you get into it??

I raise and train Dutch Shepherds for Police work.  I have 9 dogs across the US including 2 who are with the Secret Service that I did all the training on.  I have done it for almost 15 yrs.  It is now a hobby since I am back into training my RL racehorses.

I have had 2 litters of DS w/ 11 puppies.  9 pups are currently working for depts trained by the people I sold them too.

Wait till you wear a bite suit and catch a dog.  That is way cool  ;D

If you lived in the NW, I have 1 that is totally safe and reliable in his bitework.  He bites the same exact spot everytime.  All you have to wear is the jacket. He has been used as a training dog for several depts.  We have “played” w/ SWAT teams in Sacramento.  He has flown all over the country w/ me for training and demos.  It was alot of fun.  I kinda miss it :-\

Good luck and have fun.

I think police dogs are fasinating. They’re… brilliant.  I saw a demo with real police horses at my county fair not too long ago, and even if they aren’t dogs, it’s really interesting. I was amazed at how they trained the horses. I bet it’s interesting how they train the dogs too. Actually, it’s kinda scary. I saw a police dog have to practically tear some criminal apart just to stop him. (not literally - I’m exaggerating) But, still, I think it’s all very interesting. I’m happy for ya!  ;D

Law enforcement Dogs can be multidisciplinary or specialized. What are the dogs your working with being trained to do?

That’s really cool. Police dogs are really great. I love working dogs. Police, search and rescue, and guide dogs are all amazing, talented and devoted.

I got into it because I saw an ad for someone looking for a kennel attendant and I applied, it was pretty much a fluke thing.

I’m located in the NW, but right now I’m just waiting and seeing we’ve just started learning to train his way.  I can’t wait tomorrow all the cops start arriving for the handlers course.

He trains for all sorts of things down to regular police dogs, to narcotics, to companion dogs, and so on.  So far my favorite at the kennel though she is a bit nippy is a Malinois.  She looks like a deer but he tells me they are small but mighty little dogs.

The other day we started to do some bite work with my sisters German Shepherd, he was funny, scared but still barking his warning.  I had to laugh at him cause he would sound vicous and then step behind me.  Although he says a few more times working like that and building his drive he will get his confidence up and be great.
