Planning for next year... Oh the choices...

Ok, so I know this is a wee bit early to consider this, but I like to get my plans in order soon enough that I don’t have to worry later about it, if that makes sense.

I have two fillies who next year will be 4 year olds.  They’ve both been doing very well in races since they turned three, but who knows how long that will last.  So, my conundrum is, do I keep racing them or do I turn them into broodies?

First off is my best (and favorite) racer.  I wouldn’t sell her for anything, and considering what she’s won me, I got off really well winning her in a $40,000 claiming race July of last year (when I was still completely new to the game with no clue what I was doing).  0.o

Her race highlights include 2 Gr. 1 wins, 2 Gr. 2 wins, and a speed record for one of those races.  Aside from 2 races in between a couple of those, she’s won consistently or placed well.

Next is another filly who’s been doing well, though certainly not as well as Strike Out.  Out of the 10 races she’s been in this year, she’s placed somewhere between 1st and 3rd six times.

Her race highlights include 2 Gr.2 showings, and one placing in a Gr. 3 race.  Her only stakes win has been an Ungraded race.

So, do I broodify them?  Or keep racing them?  I’ve got a pretty good idea with Strike Out, though opinions are definitely welcome, but Lilly…well, I don’t know with her.

They’re both having such strong years that I’d keep on racing them until at least, say, March or April of next year…and then, if they start slackening off, you could broodify 'em and still have a chance at relatively-early foals.

Especially since your racing string is so small (and yet, so nice  ), if it were me I’d keep them running for as long as they were winning purse money for me. Once they become broodstock, all they do is cost you money.

Granted, I do tend to be biased toward racing. Breeding is fun, but racing offers more immediate gratification.

Yeah I agree.  The way it looks now they may have an even better year next year.  If not, just as good…potentially.  I say for sure keep racing unless they seemed to have lost all interest after your first 5 races or so.

That’s kind of what I figured, especially for Strike Out, but I wanted a few outside opinions before I for sure made up my mind.  Thanks y’all!
