Overheated in workout?

I was wondering what most people do when their horses get overheated in a workout? It happened to my 8yr gelding this morning and i was curious as of what to do.

When it happens to me I give about a month off. That could be way too much though.

I sent my boy home for 2weeks then brough him back with a reduced training for another week. Then he ran great!

Overheating is  one of the more serious injuries.  I think it’s the worst you can do, short of breaking a leg.  Make sure he gets some rest.  It might behoove you to ship him home, as that way he can regain natural energy at the same time while he’s sitting around doing nothing.

I would give him a minimum of 1 month’s rest, preferably 2…though I do tend to baby my horses. As Cat said, it’s actually a pretty serious injury…I’ve heard it described as all the animal’s muscles cramping up, which certainly sounds like it would be painful.

I think that each horse recovers from injuries at a different rate, but I’m also assuming that age plays a factor. So if you have an 8 yo, you might want to give him more TLC than you would a 3 or 4 yo. That’s just my theory/opinion though.

Injury recovery time is the same for all horses, regardless of age.   There is “wiggle room” in that it might take horse A 15 days to recover from an injury and horse B 19 days (same injury), but it won’t be because horse A is 3 years old and horse B is 6 years old.

Ohhhh. Well, that’s good to know then.

Definatly good to know! 8)
