mine recently picked up an OTTB. They don’t know her racing name or breeding info and would
love to find it out. They have her # (A47530) so I was wondering where I can look up more
about her. Thanks!
I’d try e-mailing/calling
the Jockey Club, they can trace horses by tattoo, though I think they charge ~$50.

It works well… I did it on
the mare that was given to me; they’ve got a really fast response time. The only thing we
(the members of the forum) could tell you without looking up the number, is her age. The
letter at the beginning of the number represents the year the horse was born in. They started
the system in 1971 I think, with a letter (A in this case) followed by 4 numbers. They
changed the system in 1990 (I think?) to have the same letter format, but added a number, so
the horses have 5 numbers now, like the tattoo number you gave (since there are only 26
letters in the alphabet the system would cycle again, and obviously there is a difference
between a horse born in 1971 and 1997…
… so if I did the math right, I think the mare
was born in 1997. She’d be 8 now I think?
Another avenue you could try, would be the
public database, but you need her registered name. (Although, assuming you’ve only got the
tattoo number, that’s probably what you’re looking for!) <a
