It's a bird, it's a plane...it's F Sixteen!

So after I got the news on Melody I decided I was going to get another horse because otherwise I would go crazy not having anything to do, riding at work is sporadic at best and I wanted something to call my own. So at work we have these racehorse owners who refuse to run there horses in claiming races (where the horse can be ‘claimed’ for a certain amount of money). So what these owners do is retire there horses if they show that they will only be competitive as claimers. They give away these horses for free with the stipulation that you can’t sell them, if you no longer want the horse you give it back to them.

So I tell my boss that I am looking for a horse and she tells me…“Darn if only they would retire F Sixteen or Grand Champion…either one would be perfect for you”. Not a day later she gets a call from these people, "We’re thinking we’re going to retire F Sixteen, he’s had two bad races and Jimmy (trainer) says he’ll probably only be good for claimers and he’s getting older (5yo) and we want to retire him sound. So my boss asks me if I’m interested…hells yea!

So it was up in the air whether he was going to retire and then a day after my bosses left last week for a 10 day vacation he shows up at work. The only reason I could think of was because he was indeed retired but a bunch of other people kept telling me, “Oh the owners are still unsure”. So I’m on pins and needles all week and then my boss comes back and says to me, “So have you been riding your boy?” I was like “No, I thought they were still unsure about retiring him.” She was aghast that no one had told me he was mine! By that time of course he had pulled all his shoes while being a hooligan outside so I had to wait until yesterday to get shoes on him and today I rode him for the first time and…this horse could go out and win a hunter class right now. He moves that nicely and holds himself together of his own accord. Of course he is going to be a jumper but that is beside the point.

And for the pictures…

  • Note: I did not cut his forelock…he came like that!

And some video’s of his races:

Too cute!  Congrats on getting a free horse.  (And I want your connections when I go horse shopping again )

He looks really well put together.  How big is he?

I think he’s about 15.3 but a lot of people are convinced he’s taller, we’ll have to stick him. lol

Yea, the people who own him are the best of people…they really want the best for their animals.

Super cute and that’s great that you’ve got another horse to keep you busy.  He looks like he’s got a really sweet expression on his face so yeah, I can definitely imagine him being a hunter .  Though looks like he’s got the spunk for jumpers.

Drop dead gorgeous, nice catch!

He’s VERY cute!! Depending on his form over fences you may be able to put him into hunters also. (My mare does both), but he does look quite spunky!!

Congrats!!

Wow, he’s drop-dead gorgeous!
I got my horse for free in a sense also. I work at a stable who leases him to me for free. He’s not a racehorse, though. Just a western pleasure horse. I love my Paint!

Good luck with him!
