Invasor conquers the World Cup...and the 'Cat"

From bloodhorse.com

I was never much a fan of Discreet Cat, he never beat anything worth noting other than Invasor who was severly compromised in the UAE Derby where he was carrying a lot of weight and hadn’t raced in months.

When the odds were evened Invasor proved that Discreet Cat was nothing but a kitten.

It was a really good race (on Invasor’s part–Discreet Cat never showed up to party). I was totally surprised that Premium Tap stepped up to challenge Invasor like he did; for a few seconds there along the stretch, it was looking like Invasor might not be able to pull it off and would be beaten by a nose.

A throat infection was very “conveniently” discovered in Discreet Cat this morning.

I talked to my boss and he told me that for this horse to have that kind of infection it would be impossible not to notice that there was a problem with him before the race.

I was rooting for Invasor and he was VERY impressive. Still though, I can believe that Discreet Cat had an infection. It could have been in the beginning stages and the race most likely aggravated it and really brought it to the surface. I’m not saying he would have beat Invasor yesterday, but he wasn’t competitive at all and he’s clearly a better horse then what he showed.

Yes, he obviously can run MUCH better than he did but I just can’t see him beating Invasor yesterday. Invasor obviously wasn’t going to let anything beat him yesterday, though Premium Tap was quite game.

Discreet Cat was out of it from the moment he left the gate… I was watching and saw a horse try to run in when they hit the main part of the track and figured it had to be one of the “lesser” horses and was surprised to realize later that that was Discreet Cat.  Once he was at the back, he just didn’t seem to care about going around.  I wonder if his jockey was a bit TOO relaxed in the gate (they made a big deal about how calm Detorri was while Premium Tap acted up).

I was happy to see Invasor take the race, though I’m tired of the Sheik’s and their stables .

I definitely buy the ‘throat infection’. I turned to my husband after the race and said ‘Something was wrong with that horse’. He just didn’t look right…I actually was wondering if it was a loose shoe or something :-/.

I agree, Discreet Cat may be a tad overrated and coddled, but their was no way that he should have looked that bad. Invasor is impressive and I was actually also impressed with the guts Premium Tap showed. We need more fun night races like that in the US

I do believe he did have a bit of an infection, but I don’t believe it is as bad as they are claiming, if it were then the infection should have been noticed and he shouldn’t have run. Granted if they scratched him the gossip would then be that they are scared of Invasor.

On another horse racing forum someone made a really good point…

“I get the feeling that Discreet Cat is a War Emblem type…the kind of horse who has to get his own way or else he just stops trying. He got squeezed back, when normally he goes right to the front. He’s not used to having to close or go around horses and I think he just got frustrated.”
