The auction isn’t really over yet, but I’m happy about my new babies, even if they did leave a dent in a my wallet. That’s what auctions are for, right?
Anyway, I just wanted some semi-cheap, but promising foals and these two caught my eye.
Wild Rebel http://www.finalfurlong.org/viewhorse.php?horse=3256
Cross Roads (S) x Wild Heart (S)
I think I mainly liked this little colt because his parents have done pretty well in their breeding career. Not great, but good. I also liked him because he’s a yearling and he’ll be officially two on January 3[sup]rd[/sup] so I can race him pretty soon. I’m still going to wait before I race him, just to make sure that he’s okay to race and not still forming, and then we’ll be off.
Destiny Star http://www.finalfurlong.org/viewhorse.php?horse=5174
Five Star Day x Destiny Due (these two don’t exist though)
This little colt here mainly appealed to me because he was going out for pretty cheap. He’s only a weanling, but that’s okay. It’ll be nice to have a foal with us. I’m willing to wait for him. I don’t know how he’ll race, but I think he’ll do just fine.
Just to let you know- It’s good that you don’t want to race him right away, and that goes right along with the way races are set up. There are also no 2y/o races until April, pretty much because it’s exactly like you said- best to let the little ones mature a bit before they hit the track.
A chestnut weanling colt out of created lines. We’re hoping he proves to be worth his $28,500 price tag. At the very least, he’s a colt in a huge field of fillies we’ve got roaming our weanling pastures.
I’ve liked Joey Three Socks for a long time, and I’m absolutely psyched about stealing her foal. This is my first foal by Boldness Shows, and so I’m not sure what to expect. However, Central Lodge does have a fabulous history of breeding monsters (e.g. our own Sacred Hill), and so I think the $65,500 we paid for this yearling filly is an absolute steal. Not sure about the name, so, we’ll see.
With so many quality foals for sale I had a hard time deciding which one to go with!!
We tried first for the Highland Laird filly Evenstar who is o/o a Gold rated mare, bidding 100k on her. Vaucluse also bid 100k on her and ended up winning that lottery-you’re a lucky boy Jase!
After losing Evenstar, we bid 100k on Precious who is by Jazz It Up and o/o a Northern Slew mare. Tall Oaks also bid 100k on Precious and also ended up winning that lottery- good luck with her!!!
Then we bid on Never Been Kissed who is by No Duplicate and o/o a Silver rated mare Kiss of Time dam of MSW The Fighting Fifty and we FINALLY won!! We’ve never owned a No Duplicate foal(although we have a mare IFT him right now) so I’m glad to get my hands on Kiss. She has a full sister that was only placed, but I’m hoping that with the new race program, more races and all that kind of stuff, this time the cross will work out better-1/3 of No Duplicate foals are SW!!
So all in all it ended up working out just fine and we have a nice new filly who will eventually be a great addition to the broodmare band having no relation to any of our stock(besides the foal Sister Boy is carrying right now of course ) !!
I picked up a couple of nice ones (at least I think so anyway)…
Chaos Theory (formerly Distinct Danger)
Distinct Possibility x Cosmic Beam
16.0hh dk. bay colt
I am still kicking myself really hard over the last DP foal that I let slip away at an auction, so I decided to put up more of a fight this time. At $11,500 I think I still got him pretty cheaply. He is the first foal out of his mom, who did not accomplish much on the track, so Chaos may just implode every time the starting gates open instead of actually racing, but we shall see.
One Hot Romance (formerly Hot Romance)
Satin Romance x Strike It Hot
17.1hh dapple grey filly
I find this girl to be interesting. Satin Romance has thrown 4 black-type foals out of just six to race, including MSW Subtle Seduction. Her dam only raced a few times, and only during her 6 yo year, and still managed to get a win and some placings in there. There are certainly some nice possibilities for both quality and longevity there. What can I say, I like taking chances on things like this. Besides, she’s just so pretty! I paid $30,500 for her. Probably could have spent more for another baby (and that certainly is a nice feeling), but I decided to rein myself in after that.
We are excited about the three foals we picked up at the FF Yearling & Weanling Auction.
After a short ride from the FF Facility to Battle Hill Farm the horse van pulled slowly into the stable yard, I had been doing the night feed, but left it to a groom to have a look at my new kids.
I started up the ramp and my head groom Travis said “Boss ya might better let me bring this first one out, he’s a bit fractious”
So I stood impatiently at the bottom of the ramp, in a moment a bright chestnut head appeared and seemed to be dragging Travis along. My heart lep into my throat as the yearling colt Dark Demand came down the ramp in three bounds, snorting the whole way. Once he was on solid ground he seemed to quiet, and I approached this large (maturing at 17.0h) son of the retired stallion Black Knight/url. The sire to MSW GCh. Determined and SP Black Cap & Queen’s Champion. He is also sire to the Platinum producing Black Swan dam of MSW ICh. Strike It Rich and SW Ch. Endless Flight & Knight Errant. He is the first foal of In Demand who is 1/2 to Black Swan. Dark Demand carries a great heritage and we hope he proves it next year as he begins his campaign on the track.
The next foal off the van was the dark grey (my favorite color of horse… lol) weanling son of Holy Bull Sacred Host this large colt boast created lines and we’re hoping they will become ingame lines as we begin his campaign on the track in 2012. He’s going to mature at 17.3h, this boy may be a steeplechaser or a distance runner, I don’t see sprints in his future.
And the last off the van was the petit Tiz Famous (Formaly Little Snowflake) a weanling dapple gray daughter of Tiznow. Although Tiznow is now an in game sire, this filly boast created lines as well, and will mature at 15.3.
I watched as Sacred Host & Tiz Famous headed towards the weanling pasture to join Battle Hill’s other weanlings Madame Justice (Lit de Justice x Lady Be Good) & Ramesses (Lonesome Glory x Pharaoh’s Spirit)
Then I lead Dark Demand into the yearling barn, where he was stalled next to Via Crucis (Cross Roads x Street Talk) and across the aisle from Foolish Dame (Foolish Pleasure x Dream Maker)
I walked back to the house and thought it was a good day…
First was A Mighty Wind a weanling son of Affirmed and Blowin’ In The Wind. From what I can tell by looking at this boy’s siblings he is going to be a sprinter.
Last was Gallavant a yearling daughter of Gallant Fox and Pharaoh’s Spirit. This little girl will be a great addition to our 2 y/o’s next year and I hope she’ll make a nice broodmare when her racing career is up.
Donnacona is a yearling by Executive Orders (sire of Stay Right Here), and out of Dry Your Tears. I’m not sure she’s worth what I paid for her (I’m guessing somebody else liked her too), but what the heck, it’s not like it’s real money
I also got Artful Royal, who’s name makes me think of the Royal Navy carrier Ark Royal. He’s from created lines, though, so might be an unknown quantity.
As the van pulled up to Raceaway’s yearling and weanling barn, three horses proceded down the ramp…
First off was a lanky brown weanling filly dubbed Christine. She should mature around 16.3 hands. She has created lines (Charismatic x Lady Houston), so she should be fun to race, and a broodmare prospect if nothing else. Ultimately, I bought her because I am in love with Charismatic.
Next, a more compact dark bay steps off, throwing her head and eyeing her surroundings. Explosive Burbon is another created weanling filly (Julie’s Explosion x Little Burbon). She will also be a racing and broodmare prospect. Bought her because I liked the name and wanted a filly.
Finally, First Blush steps off the trailer. He’s a tall, black yearling by GCh. Go For Dash (S) and out of the Platinum mare Last Loser. I nabbed him because I like his bloodlines and I think he’ll should be a good runner.
All in all, I think I found what I wanted at the auction!
Wicked (Previously named, On Angel’s Wings) was picked up first for $26.5k. He is sired by the bronze rated stallion, Full Throttle, who only produced 14 foals, ten of which have raced including 2 SP’s and 6 winners. Wicked is out of the silver rated mare earth angel who has thrown 7 foals, four of racing age including MSW Up To Heaven and 2 winners. Not a great pedigree but there is potential here.
Always end up buying 99% colts so I was determined to snag a filly and I was successful.
Soft Whispers (Previously named, Daffodil) is by the bronze rated stallion, Conspiracy Theory, who produced a total of 14 foals before retiring, nine of whom are on the track including SW Royal Assault and 5 winners. Soft Whispers is out of the bronze rated mare Blowin’ In The Wind who has thrown 5 foals with only two on the track, her three-year-old is a winner meanwhile like a lot of them her two-year-old is unplaced. Soft Whispers broodmare sire is the bronze rated West Wind who produced a total of 12 foals including 1 SP and 6 winners. Soft Whispers second dam is the bronze rated Shooting Star who threw a total of 7 foals four of which have raced including 2 SP’s.
Stillwater Farms had a very good auction because we managed to avoid buying any foals. I think this is a record, usually there’s at least one that’s irresistible.
I went into this auction eyeing Evenstar Thursday night. I got home Friday and noticed the foal count had gone up to 80 foals! I looked through all of them and saw how many Highland foals were in the auction (Rhi told me to go for the Highland foals) and I couldn’t choose! Then Say Yes caught my eye. A beautiful bay Planet Hollywood filly. I HAD to have her. I stayed up until 3am to get my bid in (I even got yelled at multiple times to go to bed). I snuck on to the computer, had trouble logging in, and got my bid in at 3:04am (this is EST time, btw). She was mine twelve hours later. After getting her, I viewed all my horses and realized two of my mares are in foal to Highland stallions
Pinto/Shelbie (Black Storm West) helped me choose between Von Hollywood and Hollywood Voodoo
Bay 16.1 Filly Yearling
Born May 1 (My birthday )
Planet Hollywood (S) x All For You (S)
$100,000
Skyclad managed to get two weanlings, and both fillies, a first for us at auction!
Goodbye Winter is a cute little light bay filly. She’s by created lines (Adios My Friend x Winter Song), and should mature to be about 15.3h. Bought her solely because of her name, although I’m hoping she’ll turn out to be a good racer, as well.
Our second filly, Cover Page, was also out of created lines (Younaguska x Leah’s Promise). She’s a pretty dapple grey filly and should be around 16.1h when she matures. Should be fun to race.
Our one other weanling, Storm Surge, should be happy to finally have some company!
I splurged $100,000 on Evenstar. She’s a decent sized (16.0h at maturity) strawberry roan filly. Her sire is Highland Laird and her dam is Question Authority. She is 1/2 sister to MSW Bright Gold and SP Worth Questioning. Her dam is 1/2 sister to MSW Celebration, MSW Sky Catcher and SP Spectacular Silver.
She should be a nice foal to race. I love Highland Laird and just had to buy this one so that Cat doesn’t end up with all the Laird babies…
Oh, and sorry Jade! I hope the foal you ended up buying does well for you!
Precious
16.1 HH Bay Yearling Filly
Jazz It Up x Sapphire Slew
This big and very beautiful not to mention well-bred girl cost $100,000 which is basically nothing for a Jazz It Up foal. Out of a daughter of A Diamond Jewel, Sapphire Slew by Northern Slew, Precious is the first foal of Sapphire, who is half to champions Crystal Rainbow, Orion’s Bell and Crown Jewels. Jazz It Up needs no introduction being the sire of 8 MSWs including All Jazzed Up and Major’s Flight who entered stud this year for the first time.
Well, I bid on a few but lost all of them because of my low budget. The weanlings seemed to be the only ones I could afford but I didn’t want to wait that long for a racer. So, no foals for me. However, I’m kind of happy because I already have two yearlings and I can’t afford to lose money right now. So, all’s well for me! Congradulations of everyone’s purchases and I hope your new foals do well for you.
Well i’m very happy with the 2 i got… i love to raise my racers so getting weanlings works for me and i got both the ones i hoped to get.
United We Stand(War Admiral x Buzzing America)… by of a top notch stud and out of an unproven mare… i love fing new nicks and hope i got a good one…
Elegant Ice(Icecapade x Elegant Style)…Out of a half brother to my all time favorite filly Ruffian and by a daughter of Sir Ivor i’m very excited to add this filly first to my racing string then to my broodmare band…I found her AFTER i had already bidded on the above colt so i was on tenderhooks for over 24 hours praying my bid would hold because of the 100k cap(i had already spent over 35k on the colt)…i was JAZZED to finally saw i got her…
I am a little disapointed i didnt get the Killing Time Baby as he is in my stable and ive been trying to buy some of his get , lol. But I did get 3 gorgeous Babies, 2 yearlings and one weanling. I renamed two of them as i tend to do . lol. Here’s hoping i have another good one like i did with last yrs buy Sugar Road , whos turned out to be a champ and i got her for a steal last yr.

I’ve got the download from the sale but it may take me until next week to do the “For The Statistics Buff” report. I’m sick with the flu at the moment and not spending a lot of time at work which is where I play F.F. from. >:D
