How about those 2 year olds?

Hey all,

I know there was a thread early in the year somewhere where two year olds were discussed, but now that we’re a few months into their season, and babies are starting to get a few races under their belts, how are everyone’s two year olds coming along?

Heheh, they’re mostly grumpy and ornery and 2yo-ish.  I blame having so many that none are in shape when it comes time for them to run.  Hopefully this will change.

Some of the brighter crayons in the box…

[color=red]Assault By Numbers by Assault out of CandleFlame.  She is 1/2 to SW Undying Flame.  Her record is 3 0-1-1, she seems partial to dirt and we’re working on figuring out equipment.  I’m actually quite surprised with how she has run, as I did not think she’d be one of my better 2yos.  Quite a pleasant surprise.

[color=red]Catwoman by Highland Bandit out of Makemeamiracle.  She’s 1/2 to two stakes placed horses, Native Miracle and Against All Odds.  She’s our first to race by Bandit, but next year we’ve got a classy little filly by him and so far I’m really liking his girls. Catwoman seems to be a turfer, and we’re trying to find out what equipment she’s partial to.  She’s 3 0-1-0-0-1 (so 2 paychecks out of 3 starts), but I know once we get the right combination this girl’s going to be a little dynamo.  Watch out.

[color=blue]Evil Eye by Lit de Justice out of Heroic Encounter.  1/2 brother to MSW Duplicate Copy.  Another turfer, who does not like blinkers.  I’m not too sure about his sire, but since he’s retired it’s always fun to have rare-er blood kicking around.  Who knows?  The boy may get studified.  YAY!  But it’s a bit premature to start making plans.  He does show promise, though.  His record is 2 0-0-1-1.

[color=red]Firmament by Affirmed out of Sunset Beauty, this one is a sentimental favorite as she’s 1/2 to Fleeting Beauty, whom I bought with the intent to race but she turned out to be a sneaky broodmare.  She is the last foal out of her dam to race, and is the full sister to MSW Brilliant Gold.  The girl’s got guts, and has a record of 2 0-1-0-1.

The rest of the buggers have some maturing (and fitnessing) to do.  I think I’m going to have to put a whole bunch out to pasture and hope they grow up a bit.  Think about what they haven’t done and bring them back as 3yos to run.

I’m debating on whether or not to start Saturnalia, as she is 50% of my homebred crop for this season.  In addition, she’s out of the stakes producing mare Fleeting Beauty.  However, she is a June baby, and I don’t want to send her in against the big scary January 2yos yet.

I have only two worth mentioning, but I’d say that’s pretty good considering I only have 4 in total :slight_smile:

High On Life by ICh. Highland Pride and out of Pretty Distinct.  This boy is the half-sib to SW Stowaway.  He has a record of 4-1-1-0-0-1.  Only once has he not done well, and because he apparently hates the blinkers.  He broke his maiden in his last start and we’ve been giving him a break before finding him another suitable race.  We like this boy :slight_smile:  He was our color war prize for last year, so we’re hoping he’ll do well for us!

No Wilds by No Duplicate and out of Walkonthewildside is the half sibling to GCh. Hearts Are Wild, and Ch. Wild Pride.  He’s done pretty well this year so far with his record being 4(2)-1-1-0-0-1.  Hehe both of their records are the same so far.  Well anyway, we’ve still got some playing around to do with his equipment, so I’m expecting him to do nice things also.

Our other two twosies are probably immature.  Emotional High hasn’t done terrably, but Orchestra was a very late baby and probably won’t seriously be run until next year.

My 2 year olds are pretty solid except for a few who don’t want to run.

Pink Ace is by Class Act out of Golden Flames. She’s a half sister to SPs Admiraless and Sea Aflame. Ace has raced three times and her only win was in the Fashion stakes. We figured out what distance she prefers and what equipment to use so now all we’ve got to is train her right and she’ll be ready for each race. She’s nominated for the Del Mar Futurity, Matron, Frizette and Spinaway so we have big plans for this pretty girl. I was suprised she’d do this well this year in the early considering she was injured in her first start.

Don’ttakemycrown is by Take Me Out out of Winter Crown. Like Pink Ace Crown has raced three times with 2 starts on the board. He’s only finished once off the board because it was allowance and he was running against better horses. He’s a awesome turfer and I hope Training becomes avaliable a little later in the year because there are some really nice turf races I’d loved to enter him in.

Trade Ship is by Presailist out of Copelan’s Trade. He’s our other stakes runner and I was suprised when he did as well as he did in the Three Chimneys Juvenile. His record is 4 0-1(1)-0-1. He was the one I was expecting to do the worst. Quite a suprise.

Sakana by Hope To Succeed out of Queen Royal. His record is 3 0-0-1-0. He’s Hope To Succeed’s only on the board finisher so far. He’s a nice colt with good bloodlines and seems to like the turf.

The Colts

Buccaneer by Seabiscuit out of Boston’s Best  3(2)-1(1)-1(1)-1-0
The first 2yo to win a stakes this year, and second in his next stakes by ¾ length. ;D

Class Above by I’m A Classic out of On A Dare 3(1)-0-1-0-0
Up and down a normal 2yo. I look for him to really come into his own at 3 or 4. ???

Desperado by Lucky Cigar out of  Pink Princess 3-0-2-0-1
I’m not a big Lucky Cigar fan, but this guy may change my mind. :astonished:

Lighting Pete by Jazz It Up out of Crafty Lisa 3(1)-0-1-0-1
Pete doesn’t hate turf, but he doesn’t exactly love it either. He showed noticeable improvement in his first dirt race. :smiley:

Touchstone  by Point Given out of Lucky Breeze 2(1)-0-0-1-1(1)
Time to try turf for this guy. Hopefully he’ll improve on the grass. :slight_smile:

Wild Thing  by Planet Hollywood out of  Just One Thing 2-0-1-0-0
Let me see 11th on dirt 2nd on turf. Turf and Tack for the near future. :astonished:

The Fillies

Forever Gone  by Worth My While out of Parting Gift 4(2)-2(1)-0-0-0
Raced her at to short an interval between races the last time out. Looks to be a turfer. 8)

Harvard Girl by Harvard Bound out of Seductive Girl 2-0-0-0-1
She’ll try turf her next time out ???

Hastings Lady by Point Given out of Lucky Breeze 3-1-0-0-1
Twin sister of Touch Stone seems to prefer turf. :wink:

By the end of the year I could be talking about the others I have 2yo’s are so unpredictable.

I’m happy so far with my 2 year olds, with 5/6 on the board or better in their first few starts.

Salem, by Wayfaring Minstral out of Timeless Wiccan, probably has the best record of Raceaway’s twosies, she’s 3(1) 1-0-1(1)-1.  Her first race she ran 4th against the boys on the dirt, then won a 5.5f Turf filly maiden.  Her most recent start was the Gr.1 Moyglare Stud Stakes where she brought home a very pleasing 3rd.  She looks like she can go both turf and dirt, but we’ll have to experiment a little more later on.  My January 1st baby, she seems a little more mature than some of the others, and should turn out to be a solid runner.

Silent Lightning (Bright as Lightning x Sounds of Silence) is one of my other top two year olds so far.  He is the first runner out of his dam, and from his sire’s last foal crop, so I wasn’t sure what to expect from him, but he is a nice surprise.  He is 3(1)-1-0-0-1(1).  He ran 5th in his first Maiden race, then responded well to blinkers and a shadow roll, winning his second maiden on the turf.  He also ran a nice 4th in the Gr. 1 National Stakes, though I fear I put him into the stakes too soon.  I’m going to move him back down to the allowances for now, I want him to get a solid start to his career.

Remember the Alamo (Omaha x Peace on Earth) is showing good promise in just his second start.  He is 2 1-0-0-0, with both starts at 6f on the dirt.  He ran mid-pack in a full field his first start, and won against a full field in a Maiden race his second.  Adding blinkers and a shadow roll made the difference.

I fought for Sugar Rogue in the auction, because I liked her lines quite a bit.  She’s by Highland Pride and out of a solid broodmare, Aquilla.  She started out with two bad runs on the dirt, finishing 9th in her first couple times out.  But, I switched her over to the turf and put just about everything on her for equipment, and she ran a much more pleasing 2nd place.  I hope she matures into a good solid filly, and hopefully she will keep running well.

It was a blank slate with the generated filly Sea Temptress, but after twice finishing dead last, I feel like I finally got somewhere with her when she ran 4th in a full field in her last race.  Taking the blinkers off seemed to help, and next I may try her on dirt.

Finally, my colt Close Enough has been dissapointing.  He’s 1/2 to MSW. Smokin’, but hasn’t shown me any promise or desire to run yet.  He’s going to go away for awhile, to play in the pastures and hopefully grow up a little.  He seems to break slowly, and doesn’t go anywhere from there.  Oh well, he’s just a baby.

I only have two, both of which I purchased at the 2 yo auction.

Catmando finished dead last in his first start and, with a switch to turf and the addition of some blinkers, placed third his next time out. It’s still very early yet to predict anything, but I’m hoping his ability to bounce back like that will make him a solid reliable runner as he matures.

Prairie Union has only had one start so far; he finished 11th. He’s a relatively young horse, having a June birthday, so it may be unrealistic to expect too much from him this early. In the meantime we’ll just try to pick judicious races for him and see what happens.

We have quite a large stock of 2yos this year so a lot have got to run much but a few have been able to stand out.

[color=blue]Cigal
This colt is running very well this year and actually changed his name at the last minute before the new year started.  We think this name fit’s him better.  He’s had 3 starts this year and his record is 3-1-1-0-1.  He has only been improving with a 4th in his maiden and then a 2nd in a turf allowance and lastly a win in a 6f dirt allowance. We are especially excited because he’s showing versitility and heart.  Beautiful little colt. :slight_smile:

[color=blue]Hugo
We are hoping this guy will do big things.  He’s out of Secret Summer making him half to 3 nice MSW’s.  He’s only had 2 starts this year but had a huge improvement his second time out.  His maiden wasn’t very impressive with a 12th place start but with a little experience under his belt and some blinkers to get him focused he finished 4th in a big field.  We think with a little more tweeking and experience he’ll get his legs under him. :slight_smile:

[color=blue]Jett Street
This colt is also improving with each start.  In his maiden he finished mid-field in 7th after wasting his energy in the middle of the race, but in his first stakes start he really was able to get his legs under him and come from behind in 8th to finish 2nd in the 5f Norfolk Stakes.  Great promise in this colt. :slight_smile:

[color=red]Royal Secret
Beautiful little mare who’s following in her half siblings foot steps being stakes placed in only 2 starts.  She’s running very consistantly finishing 5th in her maiden and then 4th in her Moyglare Stud Stakes start.  She is showing early signs of being a faithful competitor so we have high hopes for this filly.

[color=red]Trippi Flowers
This filly was a gut buy in the debut 2yo auction this year and boy are we glad we snagged her.  We were initially attracted to her size towering at 17.2h and then to her blood lines which weren’t traced to any other horses in FF. We thought if she did well on the track she would be a great broodmare to bring new blood in CDS.  In 3 starts she has shown us that she likes to run with a record of 3(1)-1-(1)-1-0.  We’re hopeing for her to be our filly baby triple contender.

Well many of my babies have only made it to the track once or twice. I’ve got 10 2yos total, i’ll only post the ones that have done well.

[color=red]Coco Diablo -(Highland Wizard x Savage Loyalty) - 2-0-1-0-0 - She’s the first runner out of her dam but she’s got an amazing sire line going on. Her first race was on turf (she hated it) but she seemed to really like the dirt. Hopefully things will continue to go well.

[color=red]Kinda Sassy - (Bright As Lightning x Gold Rush) - 2-0-0-1-0 - She’s 1/2 to MSW Golden Text, SW She Whispers and SP Westward Ho, so she’s got a great dam line, her sire has had less success in his foals. She hated the turf, loved the dirt. It’s a toss up to see how she does in the long run.

[color=blue]King Of Jazz - (GCh. Jazz It Up x Kelly King) - 2-1-0-0-0 - He’s got a great sire with tons of solid stakes horses however his dam only has winners on her side, no stakes horses. So hopefully he’ll be the first on his dams side to run in stakes! I really like the looks of this colt.

The rest have only run once and haven’t done supurb :slight_smile:

I got a bunch of babies, so I too will post my favorites.

[color=blue]Drain Away He’s a really awesome looking colt who is full to an SP mare and half to MSW The Patriot.  His dam is a really nice mare and I’m hoping that he shapes up into an equaly nice colt to give his mom an even better name.  He’s only ran twice, so I don’t know what he’ll do in the future.

[color=red]Engaging is my superstar filly this year.  Out of 4 starts, she has never placed out of the money and recently placed agianst the boys in a Gr. 1 stakes.  I know she’s going to be good.  Because she is created, she’s also going to be worth money as a broodmare.

[color=blue]Ninniku is a nice enough colt.  His dam is half to Akhetnaten, and he is by Boldness Shows.  I think he has real potential, and his race record agrees with me.  He is still looking for his first win, but in the meantime has managed a 4th or better in 3 of his 4 starts.

[color=red]Witch Is It  is my other created filly.  Strangly, created fillies do super well for me.  She has raced 4 times, and never been below a 4th.  In fact, shes won, placed, shown, and come in 4th haha.  She puts her heart into races and really does her best to blow other horses out of the water.  I think that she might run better with equip, but I’m not ready to try that yet.

So far my 2yo’s have been fairly co-operative, difficulty finding races notwithstanding! :smiley:

First, we’ll start with the Colts, I have fewer colts than I do fillies :slight_smile:

[color=blue]Ain’t Misbehavin’ This colt is 1/2 to MSW Shezawilddevil and SP fillies Wind of Mariah and Lady Admiral . He broke his maiden on Dirt by 3 and 3/4 lengths over 6 furlongs, and then returned to place 3rd in the 5 furlong Three Chimney’s Juv. He seems to want to run a bit longer, I’m looking forward to seein how he does over 7 + Furlongs on Dirt. He’s tried it on Turf and managed a 5th. 5(3)-1-0-1(1)-1 $24,550

[color=blue]My Confession This colt is 1/2 to MSW Back Roads, who is set to run in the Epsom Derby. He seems to prefer turf and wants a longer distance than 6 furlongs. His GOT points to SC, So we’ll be thinking about switching him to hurdles next year. 3-0-1-1-0 $6,000

[color=blue]Dreams of Slew This colt was my Color War prize from last year. He’s 1/2 to SP No Telling and has finished in the money one time. Everything about this Colt points to really long turf races on Turf or over Hurdles. He’s another we’re considering moving to SC next year. 4-0-0-1-0 $1,500

[color=blue]Remarkable This colt is 1/2 to SW Pointed Remark and SP  Darlington. He’s had 2 starts and the addition of equipment seems to have made the diffrence. His next outing is on turf. He too, wants to run about 8 furlongs. I’m looking forward to seeing how he shapes up. 2-0-0-1-0 $1,500

[color=blue]Quiet Fortune This Colt is 1/2 to SP Azhei. He’s had 2 starts so far, we’re still trying to figure him out. He seems moody and distracted. He has perhaps the best GOT of all my 2yo’s, so I’m hopefully he just needs some time to mature, and the right equipment to really do well. 2-0-0-0-0 $0

And now on to the Fillies.
[color=red]Darling Diplomat  This lovely girl is 1/2 to MSW Yes Massa and SP Make the Call and Foreign Fantasy. She’s won 2 of 3 races, never finishing out of the money. She’s definitly a turf horse, and her next outing is a Stakes race, we’re excited!. 3 -2-0-1-0 $40,000

[color=red]Angel of Whimsy This filly is a created horse from the sale. With so little to go on, finding the right equipment and surface has been interesting!  She broke her maiden on Turf, and seems to have a preference in that direction. She’ll have one more try on Dirt before we can say for sure. 3-1-0-0-1 $13,050

[color=red]Irish Jig Another Created horse. I think i got her figured out, Dirt with a F8. She broke her maiden last time out and we’re waiting for another race for her. She’s a beautiful dark grey, and i loved her name! 3-1-0-0-0 $6,300

[color=red]Don’t Let Go This girl is 1/2 to MSW Determined and SW Aly Oops. She finished 5th once, and we’re still trying to get her figured out. Hopefully though, once she matures and we get that done, she’ll be a good allowance runner at least!. 3(1)-0-0-0-0 $450

[color=red]Frozen Forest Another Created horse, that we’re still trying to figure out. She’s run twice on dirt, next outing is on turf. 2-0-0-0-0 $0

[color=red]Scarlet Letter And yet another Created filly that i just can’t figure out. I’m hoping she’s just immature. 3-0-0-0-0 $0

[color=red]Stealthily This girl is half to SW Rula kat & SP Captian’s  Folly. She has a nice enough Got, and will probably be a sprinter, when she decides to give racing a try!3-0-0-0-0 $0

So there they are, over half my racing string are 2yo’s. I’ve got some really nice ones, and some disturbing ones LoL.
Don’t you just have to love 2yo’s!

MSF-

Well I’ve got one two year old filly that was one of my original horses.

Wicked Livy-Was my created filly that I’m hopefully starting to figure out. She’s only raced in sprint races on the turf two times out coming in fourth once and sixth once. If my suspicions are right she likes the 5 to 5.5 furlong range.

[color=red]Ice Princess is a created 2yo that I got from the two-year old auction. Has raced twice, both times on the dirt and hasn’t done anything. Racing tomorrow on the turf…we’ll see.

[color=blue]Joyeux Oiseau is another created 2yo that I got from the two-year old auction. He has raced twice, once on the dirt and once on the turf. Hasn’t done anything, came in dead last in both. He just turned two-years old on May 26 so he’s quite immature.

[color=blue]Yes It’s Paddy also is created, and from the same auction as the other two. He’s a february baby so he should be more mature than some. Has only raced once, and I will say that he did try. Came in 8th/14 and was all over the field. Broke sixth, then got up to fourth by the half, then faded to eighth. He did try though, despite the culture shock I’m sure he was experiencing.

And finally the two stars…

[color=red]Be Kipper is another created two-year old from the same auction as the others. This girl isn’t even officially two years old yet and she has raced beyond what I thought she would this early on. Her first start, a 5f Maiden for 2yoF on the dirt, she broke slowly, fought through a huge field of bumbling two year olds, and managed to finish 2nd/14. I was blown away to put it simply. In her second start, a 5f NW3 Allowance for 2yoF on the turf she broke even slower and yet again fought through a huge field to come in 3rd/14. In her third and most recent start I put her back on the dirt and added blinkers. Without realizing it, I threw her in with the boys which makes this race even more impressive to me. She was entered in a 6f Open Allowance for 2yo on the dirt, and once again was having a tea party in the gate. Despite this, and running against the boys, she fought hard to come in 3rd/14. If she keeps this up, I don’t know what kind of monster I will have on my hands, though I’m sure to be spiteful she will decide that she doesn’t want to race anymore.  ;D

And by far my best two-year old…

[color=blue]Sleipnir I bought as a yearling at the annual yearling auction. He has National Champions in both his parents, so he’d better be good.  ::) He is also 1/2 to MSW’s Highland Desperado and Robin Hood and 1/2 to SP’ed Flipside and Worth It All. In his first start, a 5f Maiden for 2yo on the dirt he ran a very impressive race, coming in 2nd/14 by a pretty close margin. In his next race, the GII Maribyrnong Plate he once again ran an impressive race, coming in 2nd/14 by 1 3/4 lengths, adding stakes placed to his racing record. His third start was the GIII Kentucky Breeder’s Cup, where personally I think he was unfit, I gave him a month off, because he’s two and I don’t want to over race him, but he still ran a very nice race, coming in 4th/14. I ran him back in his fourth and most recent start two weeks later and he dazzled me, showing me he thinks he knows what he’s doing he broke his maiden in a 5f Maiden on the dirt for 2yo. I have big plans for this little colt. Hopefully he’s up to them.

Sadly i can never get mine into races…i have a crop of 20ish and i think 3 have raced…one time each… :'(
