Horses?

Well…decided to get a post

going to amuse myself :stuck_out_tongue:, and maybe get some conversation going.

At the moment I have one

horse. Mintano aka Melody is a 16.2hh Grey-Roan Throughbred mare. I purchased her in

September of 2003 from the Thoroughbred

Retirement Foundation. At that time I had been riding for about 8 years, and basically

rode anything that was considered equine. I loved riding the greenies so I wanted a

project…a young horse that with potential to go somewhere…I love competition, I needed a

jumper. So my trainer and I went out and searched for horses; it was hard because I had a

limited budget, but it was ok since greenies tend to be cheaper.

We finally found some

horses…but only ended up looking at two. The first mare Portia was wonderful…I loved her,

but she turned out to be eighteen years old…not what age I wanted at all. So we scratched

her from the list and later that week went to see some more horses down in South Jersey. They

were TRF horses, most had raced but some hadn’t. We got down there and found out there was

only one left that hadn’t been purchased.

So we went into the barn and looked at

her…she was gorgeous! She was a grey-roan with a black mane and tail. She also had that 'I

know I’m better than you’ kind of look to her (since I’ve gotten her it has only gotten

worse). So the woman that was fostering the mare for the TRF, Mary Ann got her tacked up and

brought her out. Turns out she was losing a shoe (should have known those feet were trouble).

Mary Ann took off both her front shoes and rode her anyway, and a really nice bonus, she was

fine even though she had no shoes on. She was a really cute mover, even though she was really

unfit.

I got on her and instantly loved her. She was very quiet and just a very nice ride.

We did some little jumps and I fell in love even more…she was sold.

A few days later she

was at my trainers barn. Well let’s just say that I love her to death but she isn’t exactly

the easiest horse…her feet were crap, and she was still a little skinny. Well it’s almost

been two years and she still isn’t at the weight we want her…trying to get weight on this

horse is really hard, though she’s on a new diet and seems to be gaining again. Since we got

her she had gained a good hundred pounds, but needed another 50. We’ve still been trying to

get that weight on, but she isn’t skinny, just slim. Her feet are just now getting

decent…the first year I had her it was almost impossible to keep shoes on her feet, they

were just like marshmallows. Now though (crosses-fingers!) her feet have gotten better and

look phenomenal compared to how they did – of course this is after tons of Farrier’s

Formula, half a dozen lost shoes, and bottles of Tough Stuff.

Riding wise she is quite

amusing. We’ll just say that everyone at my barn is scared to get on my horse…she is VERY

powerful and loves to randomly out of the blue freak out and go galloping and bucking down

the ring, though by now none of this fazes me, and she has gotten a lot better, we only do it

on the occasion now. She’s been to a few shows and has done awesome, even though she is no

Hunter, she has pinned in a few classes. In May we’re starting jumpers (yay!), which she

should be awesome at, she is one of the boldest horses I know, and as my friend Toni says;

‘as long as we have no refusals and knock-downs, Mel will be unbeatable.’ Which is probably

true, she is a freight-train…that and she never slows down, even her walk is

fast.

For some history on her…She was trained at Philadelphia park and raced eight

times…never broke her maiden. This will pretty much sum up her racing career; 'In her

final start, an $8,000 maiden claimer on Jan. 4, 2003 at Philadelphia Park, she lost by

26 ? lengths.’

Here’s a pic of

her;

Your mare is gorgeous!

My first horse had bad feet too, and I found that Focus HF works super well. It had her feet

growing faster in just a few weeks. It’s amusing though because you sounded like me. I had

been riding for 8 years when I got my second horse, and I rode donkey’s bareback in a halter

and mules on trails and world champion walking horses and everything in between. I like the

young ones too, but unlike you I got one that had never been ridden before. Well good luck in

jumpers with her. She sounds like she should do well in that for you.

…drool… I have a thing for greys.

I had an OTT TB,

Java, who was definitely my horsey soulmate. I got her when she was 4 (in 1998), and we did

hunter/jumper type of stuff fairly well, though she was a bit too antsy to do well at the

hunters. She got kicked by another horse in the field, though, and broke her leg. She

was put down after surgery when she was 8. :frowning:

Now I’ve got The Princess, aka Emma.

She’s a 2002 TB/Westphalian filly, whom I’ve had since she was 4 months old. She just

turned 3 on Friday (wow!), and is finally starting to look a bit more adult and less

rangy/strange. She’s got very good movement, when she cares to move. I’ve ridden her

a handful of times, but so far have yet to go past a walk. I’m hoping to get her registered

with the International Sporthorse Registry and/or American Warmblood Society this summer.

I’ll probably sell her in another year or so, and get another OTT filly. (I would love

to buy one of Java’s sisters, but I doubt that’ll happen, as they’re in AZ/CA.)

Thats horrible about Java

:frowning:, sounds like Mel…antsy, she just cant stand still whatsoever except for the farrier,

we’ve decided that she is in love with him, he is the only one she will stand completely

still for on the cross-ties.

Java would stay still on the

ground, but once you were on her back, she wanted to be going somewhere…ideally going

quickly, and jumping cool stuff on the way.

Your mare IS very pretty,

I’m also with Shanthi in that I also LOVE greys!
I have a TB ex racehorse too, full name

Catch A Legend(aka Strider;FF Strider named after him) and he is also very ansy once you are

up on his back. Never really WANTS to stand completely still when you are up on him although

he’ll do it just fine on the ground. Must be an ex racehorse thing. He isn’t over eager to

get started into a canter or gallop but if you get another horse running alongside him he

turns it into a race-loads of fun when you’re out in the open! His race record was 5 starts

1 win, 1 2nd and just a little over 2 grand in earnings-all done in his 3yo year. Now he’s

But he’s such a sweetheart and it broke my heart when I decided to sell him because I

can’t afford a horse anymore in college. I think I may have FINALLY found a great home for

him (very nice woman who even offered to make up a buy back contract for me if she ever sells

him so that I’d have the first option). Hopefully she’ll buy him because as far as I’m

concerned she’s a dream home for him (besides me of course, I babied him  but she will

too!)

Wow they’re both so

gorgeous! I don’t have a horse, but I’ve been riding for 10 years and I ride a bunch of

OTTBs. Someday I will get one, when I can afford it!

Good luck, Jade. I still

get sad about selling my last TB. There were tons of reasons to do it, but it’s hard :frowning:.

Sounds like your potential buyer’s a better fit than mine was.

And I’m not going to talk

abt Callie b/c it’ll make me sad . But I’ve had two TB’s, both former racers. One’d

been off the track ages, a jumper at St. Andrews, and a lesson horse at MacNair’s by the

time I bought him at age… umm, hmm, 9? I think?. The other is Callie who was 4, not just

OTT but OTT SC. I had a blast with them, but I’m thinking Arab next time I buy… my TB’s

shared a pasture w/ my Mom’s Arab and they looked extra dumb. No, seriously, Hollywood (the

older one) would literally run straight into trees. But he was awesome to jump.

And your

mare is adorable. Totally has that pony-mare (even though she’s a TB) look of "I’m cute

and that means I can be a witch"

Hey, I

talked about Java, and she’s not even alive. :stuck_out_tongue: :frowning: You can at least still track Callie

down and buy her/or her baby someday.

True enough I suppose.

Wonder if she’s a mom yet… they sold her last spring so maybe!

Aw, Callie babies…cute.

Yea…that is exactly her personality to. She knows she’s

gorgeous and uses it to her advantage. :stuck_out_tongue:

To cute for her own good.

I have a GORGEOUS grey Arab Mare named Diamante. She loves jumping and is quite good

at it! I only recently purchased her last year, and my trainer says the show ring looms in

our future this summer! I’ve tried Western on her and I’m considering barral

racing…but I love her…

The weirdest thing about her is that she curls her

upper lip(flehman), at apples! Who would think of a horse thinking apples taste weird?!

I’ll try to get some pics of her up soon, as soon as I figure out how…

Actually, horses also do it

because they can receive a lot more scents when they do. So it could be the smell of the

apple that she likes, rather than the taste that she dislikes. I’ve found that if a horse

thinks something tastes weird/bad, they just spit it out. :stuck_out_tongue:
