Today my world fell apart… about a month ago we found this wonderful Arabian mare… a beautiful 7 yo chestnut, with a gorgeous eye and one of the sweetest personalities I’d ever met yet full of snorty Arabian attitude… a strong 15.2h and wonderful movement… she was going to be my new Western Pleasure mare… and possibly Armature Halter horse… she came to us unnamed and unregistered… but the breeder had all the paperwork… and it wasn’t going to be a problem getting her registered… She was sired by the pure Spanish stallion Retador…So we had decided to name her Tesoro Perdida… Lost Treasure in Spanish… Tess for short…
This morning during feeding time… Tess didn’t come to the front of the paddock with Starlee (2 yo Arabian filly she shared a paddock with)… she stood toward the back… and Starlee was very agitated and running back and forth between the gate and Tess… one look at Tess was enough to know there was something very wrong… her right front leg was dangling from the knee… the cannon was completely severed and it was a compound fracture… the vet was called… but I knew in my heart he was coming to put her down… there was no fix to this… at 9:45 this morning we said goodbye to Tess… my tears still flow… even though we had her such a short time… she had stolen my heart…
Goodbye Tess… Safe walk across the rainbow bridge… where four sound legs carry you to a wonderful field of open pasture… and all your pain is gone… I Miss you Dear Heart… Goodbye…
Aw, I’m so sorry for you guys. I remember how excited you were about her. Speaking from experience, it took several years for me to get over my mare dying (also via broken leg), but now I can remember her awesome personality and spirit. I hope the same is true for you.
I’m soooo sorry. :S We’ve only ever had one mare who had to be put down from a broken leg and that was a long time ago (knock on wood that it doesn’t happen again), but I remember the mare we had who died from colic and I know how much it hurt. I’m sorry for your loss. She was a beautiful horse.
That is so sad. I am so sorry for your loss and you brought tears to my eyes.
This is an excerpt from a poem i wrote about Barbaro long ago:
" Horses everywhere know he has passed,
just as they know his legacy shall last.
The horses of heaven are gathered today
to show him his way through the
crowd that has gathered to say that
you did them one proud. "
Their time with us is so brief, yet filled with so many memories of just being there. They are family and love us unconditionally no matter what. I am sure her brief stay with you was filled with love and joy for both of you.
