I have just been thinking about future breeding plans for some of my racing mares and wondered how the “genetics” work in this game.
I have a very well bred filly from two IntCh. but so far she has shown all the racing ability of a carthorse. If her statistics are such that she will never be very good (if she has got the worst of her parents abilities or some random numbers are used in generating all foals and she got bad ones) is it only her own statistics that go into the mix for her desendants or is there a method used that can take her parents abilities into account, to a certain extent, when she has her own foals. In other words if you get a duff horse from good parents you are breeding from a duff horse and the good parents only influence their direct offspring.Clearly good parents will have better statistics to pass on so the chances of a good foal increase but if they pass on only bad statistics to a given foal presumably the foal will only have her own bad statistics to pass on. Hope this makes sense and would love to hear from the veterans of the game as to their ideas
I believe there are other factors thrown into the mix then simply the mares racing abilities although I could be wrong. I’d love to hear the answer too from someone with a lot of breeding experience.
Genetics are taken into account as far as the dam, sire, sire’s sire, and dam’s sire. If anyone else in the first 3 generations shows up multiple times (i.e. inbreeding is involved), those horses also play a factor.
Also, horses have a “bloodline potential factor” involved, too…a superstar horse with crappy genetic power = crappy babies. Likewise, a crappy horse with awesome genetic power = much less crappy babies.
And, on every breeding, there is a chance for a foal that ranges from superawesome to supercraptastic. The chances are pretty small for the extremes, and the chances are weighted by the parents’ abilities (i.e. awesome parents are slightly more likely to have a superawesome baby), but in theory, any breeding could produce a TC winner.
thanks for that information - i thought it might be something like that but i wondered how grandparents fitted in, if at all. i know you try to make the various aspects of the game as realistic as practical which is why i asked. so she may possibly make a better broodmare than racer. very useful to know!
2013 will be my first yr breeding and I am thinking of breeding a “created” mare.

I have done Hypothetical Breedings and get confused.
Can someone explain the info on the following link?
finalfurlong.org/hypomating.php
“This Breeding” column, does that show what the foal will do? Can Do if managed right? Or??
Would this be a good cross? An excellent cross? or a crap shoot since she is a created horse?
I have purchased 2 other broodmares and would like to breed them also, but I just want to make sure I understand as much as possible.
I read the posts that are prior to this one and wondered if the “Genetic power” is for all horses in the game(FF bred & game horses) or more so towards the FF bred horses with bloodlines full of G, B, & S ranked horses?
Obviously we don’t know what the “bloodline potential factor” is till the foals hit the track and race right?
Thanks in advance!!
Hypo matings are just sort of a listing of “possibilities” based on how the parents did or how the parents offspring did. I wouldn’t completely expect those results since some parents can totally throw it off (for instance for earnings a sire might have earned 10million but the dam is unplaced-the foal is predicted to earn 5million-its a possibility but definitly not a guarantee). Really, for me, its extremely useful for figuring out pairings to breed a closely related horse to some champ OR fill out your mare’s weaknesses or further strengthen her strengths. For instance, if your mare was a GI winner at sprints and you want to breed a sprinter, type in the sire’s name and you can quickly see if he was also GI quality sprinter. Or, if you want a more balance foal, type in a sire to look for a sire who was a GI winner in classic races etc.
At least that’s the idea, I think theres an error in the program with listing horses that are GI winners at a certain distance as unplaced etc. So double check the info but its great for giving you an idea of strengths of your pairing. I use it to check out every breeding. (like I said before, its useful to figure out how other similar crosses have done)
The other thing I consider is “proven” studs. Studs that have had a variety of mares bred to him and those foals have done good. Good thing to consider with an unproven mare.
I do that in RL.
I wasn’t sure how much those hypo matings should weigh into the equation of breeding. Thanks for clarifying it.
