I know that they gain an age at new yaer but what if the foal is due Jan 1st and gets born late Dec. Will they become a yearling??
I know a nubie question!
You’re exactly right. That’s why everyone dreads having a baby in December–it means they have to/should sit their 2yo season out, since the foal’d really only be as mature as a yearling during that time. They should start okay as a 3yo, but even then, they’re facing horses that are much more mature than they are.
OHHHH, I hope my baby is a new year babe!!! Wait…same with my son’s I think…I will have to let him know too… I guess breeding in March would safest then??
Late Feb’s usually OK, pretty much the earliest they can go is 6-7 weeks. But yes, to be absolutely sure, March or later.
I had a mare due on the 11th. Luckily she waited until the 5th to pop. No New Year’s baby for meeee!
Heh. I’m going to have to hold my breath in December of this year. Just bred a mare whose projected due date is December 31st. Please, no!
Wow, that is good to know!
I don’t think I’ve ever said this before, but I hope your mare is late, Cat! You breed awesome horses (with just as awesome names!) I’d hate to see a Cricket Hill baby waiting around an extra year D:
Oh! Me too
I love your horses too and it would definatly suck if one had to wait!!
I have a question about the live foal gurentee…if the babe is born then dies due to complications does that fall under the gurentee??
There is no guarantee by Final Furlong. Some stallion owners provide a Live Foal Guarantee for their stallions, but you would need to contact them directly if you have a foal that dies. Since horses don’t die of any causes other than birth (stillborn) or old age, however, a stud owner’s LFG would apply, if there is one.
