Derby Fever 2009

Derby Fever’s already moving in to a few boards I’m a member of. Friesan Fire, who just won the G3 Lecomte Stakes, looks good and now I probably jinxed him. Midshipman and Vineyard Haven are off in Dubai, and nothing good came out of Triple Crown candidates who winter there, sad to say. Lots of people are high on Old Fashioned, too. And there are lots of up-and-coming three year olds who overall seem to have better pedigrees and talent than last year’s dismal crowd. I’m just hoping Stardom Bound keeps improving by leaps and bounds, because I think this is the year that we really need a filly runner, and she’s got the size and style for it.

What do you guys think?

Midshipman (<3) or Stardom Bound FTW.

It sucks Zenyada is older…she could kick triple crown arse. :stuck_out_tongue:

I had liked Vineyard Haven for the BC Juvie but that turned out so well. I haven’t really been following the two year olds last year or them this year, as three year olds, but I think I better start picking up on that, no? But I do like Midshipman. He looks like a nice colt, so we’ll see what happens this year, yeah?

People are writing off Midshipman and Vineyard Haven, though, because no horse ever came out of Dubai to compete in the TC (and actually win). We probably won’t know how well they’ve grown up over the winter, and I already miss Midshipman; I was there for his BC Juvie win and it was awesome. I think he was the only winner to be that close to the pace throughout the entire race.

I’m still ticked about Street Hero’s injury and retirement. He was my Derby pick (since Colonel John’s brother Mr. Hot Stuff doesn’t seem to have put it together yet) and in all honesty I’m on the Stardom Bound bandwagon.

is waiting for the mysterious 3yo Tiznow colt/filly to start making noise

oh? What Tiznow horse would that be? He’s one of my favorite sires, but I don’t know many of his foals.

I have no idea. They’re notoriously late developers, and this is the last of his pre-Folklore crops to turn three (first post-Folklore crop is hitting the track this year!) so I’m hoping one of them decides to be a little more precocious and starts making some noise.

Man, if only Slew’s Tiznow didn’t end up going wide all the way in the San Fernando…he and his brother have such terrible luck,  :frowning:

Two of the big winners yesterday were Chocolate Candy in the California Derby and The Pamplemousse in the San Rafael, with favored Square Eddie finishing second. Of course since the tracks here are synthetic they remain question marks. Oh well, better to go from synth to dirt than the other way around.
