I have a couple nice mares (and some not-so-nice ones) that I’m planning on retiring next year. How do I choose the best studs for them? Do I pick a stud that has similar running tastes as she does? Do I pick a stud that favors her weak points? I’ve played for over two years, but I somehow feel like a total newb in so many things.
For example, my Gonewiththeindians mare has done very well for herself, and I like that she runs well on Dirt Sprints, but I don’t like she showed hardly any talent until her 5yo year. Would I pick a quick-maturing stallion that favored dirt sprints for her?
You can do pretty much whatever you want, depending on what your focus is. If you like the mare and want a “copy” of her, pick a stud that is very similar to her (ideally one who also has strong points in whatever she’s weak in). If you’d like to add speed/stamina/jumping/[insert ability here] to your mare, pick a stallion who’s strong in whatever that ability is. You can also experiment a bit…breed a sprinter to an endurance stud or a dirt mare to a turf stud, to see if you can add versatility, etc.
As for Gonewiththeindians…like I said above, if you like her ability at dirt sprints, try and pick a stallion who showed good talent as a 2/3yo and did well in sprints (could be dirt/turf), and hope for the best.
