I joined FF back in august so still learning the ropes of how everything operates. When entering races I usually only saw 1 or 2 claimers in the list of races prior to the new year but as of Jan 2nd I’ve noticed a huge influx of them(5-6 per race day). Is this normal for this time of year? I’m having more difficulty finding races for my horses in the new year. (I prefer not to race in claimers)

Yes, it’s usually more of them, and I often claim really nice horses early in the year 
You could risk running in say a 50k claimer (unlikely anyone will claim for that price). Then your ok to run the horse in starter allowance races which are easier races to win.
I’ve currently got a 6yo horse for sale at 10k who won a G1 last September but nobody buying, hence my logic with the 50k nobody will claim colonel comment.
You will see some well bred Final Furlong owned horses that are really worth claiming though so keep an eye out for those
