I have this mare [color=red]Ch. Shy Shy which hasn’t foaled yet, and I was planning to wait with her breeding until next year, but now I hesitate; I know that foals born early in the year have more chance to run as 2yo’s, but on the other hand, late foals are supposed to be more sound…? What do you think? She’s due 7/19/18.
I’d breed her, personally. Unless you absolutely hate summer-born horses, it seems silly to skip a foal entirely. The effect of breeding early vs late (maturity/soundness) is pretty small anyway, so I wouldn’t let that sway me. (The obvious catch is that even if the resulting foal matures early as a 2yo, it won’t actually be 2 until June/July 2021.)
Thanks! So I’ll breed her. It’s impossible to race all those 2yo’s anyway…
