I went riding today, and we did well for about 20min. But then Emma’s fieldmate was led by the ring, so she got lazy/distracted. I urged her back into a trot, but she decided to buck/rear instead. I guess she liked rearing, 'cause she did it again, but went too far and overbalanced. Long story short, she flipped over and landed on top of me.
We both got up, and I eventually caught her and led her to the fence. Then apparently I briefly (30s or so) passed out, but after I woke back up I got back on and had Emma’s fieldmate’s owner lead us around the ring ('cause I was pretty dizzy). After getting Emma settled, I went to the ER to get checked out.
Turns out nothing’s broken, which is a relief, but my right knee is about the size of a basketball, and my right hip is very badly bruised, as is my right elbow. (I think that’s the way Emma rolled to get up.)
So if I’m not as active in the next few days, it’s because I’m resting/napping. And, on the off-chance that I’m more active, it’s because I’m bored of resting/napping.
Ouch. Not fun. That same thing happened to me two weeks ago, granted I was riding a pony. I hit my left side though, still can’t walk great once I get working, cleaning stalls, waterbuckets, etc.
Thanks, guys. I’m definitely very sore today, but hopefully generally on the mend.
Juli, that sucks that you had the same thing happen to you - I remember reading your post about it, but I guess it didn’t really sink in as to what had happened. Hope you feel better soon!
Man you guys make me scares to get a baby. I have decided that I want to get a baby and train it but all these horror stories are making me second guess. I guess when it’s bad its really bad and when things go good they go really good.
I hope you recover well/quickly Shanthi and that Emma has learned her lesson…well if there was a lesson to be learned…
Yeah, my stepdad seems convinced that I’m “over my head” with having gotten a baby. I don’t think the baby part is the problem, I think Emma’s just a Princess and a Brat.
I’m thinking she may be heading to a professional trainer for a month or two, though, and hopefully that’ll either straighten her out enough that I can continue working for her, or it’ll make her marketable enough to sell quickly.
I think Prof’s help, even at the level of like 2 months. My mom bought and raised a 6mo old Arab and when he was 3 he went to his breeder for 60days. He came back and I’ve been riding him ever since with nothing worse than a couple half hearted bucks. If my mom can survive, you can do it, Holly.
That said, I have no clue what Emma’s problem is other than she just has an attitude issue from having been injured so many times so she thinks she deserves pampering ALL the time.
Yeah, kinda like when The Mauler fell trying to attack me, didn’t have much sympathy there even though it must have hurt. I agree about the pro training thing >.> I wish I had money to ship mine off.
At least it looks like someones about to buy him
My knee has been pretty uncomfortable for the past week and a half, and I’ve been to the ER once already to get a bunch (literally 30 CCs) of fluid drained from my knee (some of which has since come back ).
However, we did an MRI today, and that’s really all that’s wrong - a giant, painful bruise, and a bunch of fluid. No fracture, no ligament tear, etc. The bruise can theoretically take up to 3-6 months to heal, but at least it’s “just” a bruise.
And I guess in the meantime, I need to find someone to work with Emma until it doesn’t hurt to touch my knee, since I doubt I really want to be gripping a saddle with a severely bruised knee.
That’s good news. The fluid should not be a major problem, 2 of my boys have been through that. Bruises are “funny” things though. Healing time usually depends on how deep the tissue damage was.
