BARABRO WON THE KENTUCKY DERBY!!! Yay!! I have ties with Barabaro!
That was an incredible win by Barbaro! I don’t really follow the RL racing world too much other than the TC, but that is one good colt!
Yeah, that was an incredible race. Wow, he just opened up his stride and showed some serious speed. Impressive win, for sure.
DO you guys think that he can win the crown?? I think that he can!!
You have to believe he can. The jock really never even had to urge him. It was about as easy as it gets. Never used the whip other than to flag him. That boy made it look easy.
I think he definately is capable, from seeing how he ran today, but he’d have to get 2 more perfect runs, which could be tricky! I’m keeping my fingers crossed for that though, that would be sweet!
Great race. I was rooting for Brother Derek though
I think it’s a bit coincidental that Brother Derek finished fifth, same position Point Given finished in 2001’s Derby. Both were morning line favorites to win, both had wide trips, and Point Given went on to win the Preakness and the Belmont.
Barbaro is obviously very good, but he also had a perfect trip. I think he better watch out if Brother Derek runs in the Preakness. Should be an exciting race.
Go Brother Derek!
Nice trip! Yay Barbaro.
There isn’t much I can add except that it was a very well ridden Race. Barbaro’s been my favorite since the Florida Derby, it’s been a looong time since the horse that was my favorite won the derby.
I Think this colt has a shot, as long as he has good trips. That’s the key, he has the speed, he just needs the right ride.
YAY Go Barbaro!
Wow, I watched the race at work yesterday, and I think I scared my boss a little bit. Then again, how often are people yelling “go baby go!” at a country club?? Whoops! Anyways, he really had an absolutely perfect trip. I absolutely could not pick a favorite, I really like a lot of those horses (and quite a few three year olds that didn’t run in the derby, aka Achillies of Troy, First Samurai, etc), but I was rooting for Brother Derek. But when they came around into the strech, I knew he didn’t have a chance. But, as Alex Solis said, there was nothing he could do, he just had too many factors hampering him.
Anyways, I will be watching to see how Barbaro comes out of the Derby. I think he can win the Preakness without a problem, because he’s had such a long time off, he won’t be as tried as some of the others. Although, even though he’s very fresh, the Triple Crown is hard on the horses, so the Belmont will be an interesting race, I think.
I never had a clear cut favorite for the Derby what with the quality field we had. I loved Barbaro but I just couldn’t pick any one horse. Can he win the TC? Yes, but Silver Charm, Charismatic, Real Quiet, War Emblem, Funny Cide, & Smarty Jones could have also. He’s going to have to be a little more special than these seven horses. I haven’t seen enough of him to say whether he is or not.
As for Brother Derek, I like him, but I just don’t think he’s going to have a chance in these TC races. He gets rank easily and doesn’t seem to do well if he doesn’t have control. Like Jerry Bailey said. The TC races are not for horses like Brother Derek who don’t like to rate. Brother Derek didn’t even have that much of a terrible trip yesterday. He got bumped but it is the Kentucky Derby, if you use bumping as your horses excuse then your horse shouldn’t be in a race where bumping in inevitable.
Barbaro is the kind of horse that can win the TC. He can rate, and he is very easy going and tough. The morning of the Derby he had an unintentional 4f work and look he won the race without the jockey having to touch him. He doesn’t need the perfect race, he went to his knees a little at the start, got bumped around a tiny bit, and it didn’t faze him in the least. And I think he lives for a challange. Look at what he did in the Florida Derby, the first time he ever really had a horse look him in the eye and he still prevailed. Then went on 5 weeks later to run the best race of his life. The tenacity this horse seems to have will help him along these next 5 weeks.
Being older than most in this game … the only other horse that I have ever seen that has run like that… after a 5 week layoff even… was… Secretariat… Barbaro not only won the race, he made it look easy… If the race had been the Belmont he might have won by 25… It’s not that the other horses are bad but every once in a while a monster comes along for a generation to watch that just makes you go “WOW” Will he win the T.C.? I can’t see how he won’t! The Belmont will be the test. If you see him coming around the final turn there with one or two horses he’ll open up so many lengths so fast that it’ll make your head spin. Hopefully here’s the Horse Hero for your generation!!

I loved Barbaro, never mind the fact that FI and I won $$$ betting on the race. He did have a perfect trip, and look forward to the Preakness, though I think you always need to keep an eye out for any local horses that know Pimilico well.
I’m still hoping Brother Derek can pull off the spoiler. I think Barbaro had a very visually powerful race, but let’s remember he ran the race a whole 2 seconds slower then Secretariat did, plus he had a perfect trip, where as many of the horses who were suppose to challenge did not. I remember that 2 years ago one of the jockeys compared Smarty Jones to Secretariat, and he obviously failed to live up to such a huge expectation.
I though this excerpt from a Bloodhorse article was interesting …
I guess we’ll have to just wait and see …
It will be interesting to see what will happen if both Brother Derek and Barbaro get clean trips. I still have a feeling Barbaro would whip the pants off Brother Derek, but I could be wrong as I am wrong about many things.
Not to sound like I can’t stand criticism of Barbaro, but even when I saw them break for the first time I could tell Barbaro had stumbled pretty bad at the start. He picked himself right up and ran and still managed to get in front of most of the horses going into the turn. So it’s not like Barbaro didn’t show heart and deal with at least some adversity.
That said, I didn’t realize Brother Derek lost a shoe in the race, and I’m surprised that hasn’t made more of the stories, considering how many accolades the media was piling on him pre-Derby and basically ignoring Barbaro.
Found this article on bloodhorse.com and found quite a few pieces of information that impressed and amused me.
To do the last two furlongs in almost 24 seconds flat. Impressive.
Intriuging piece of information. Ah the racing world, gotta love the curses and the “trends”.
I actually looked the name Barbaro up and it meams Barbarian in Italian. So gotta give him props for having a cool name
