At the track

Chris kept her eyes glued to the black stallion jumping soundly through the large field for the Hard Scuffle.
“Yes” Ashleigh said as Traveler moved past two more horses to settle comfortably in 6th place just behind the leaders.

“Come on Melanie and Traveler.” Samantha murmured. The young trainer was gripping the railing in front of her so hard that her knuckles were white.
“Go Traveler” Chris shouted as the black stallion leaped over the last jump and sprinted away.
" He’s not going to make it" Ashleigh said loudly from behind Chris " He’s got 7 lengths to make up." When Time Traveler and Melanie galloped past the finish line.
" Oh well I’d rather him come back fit and sound than him come back a broken winner and he can still go on to the Joe Aitcheson and Meadow Brook" Chris said leading the way down the grandstand. When Melanie led Time Traveler over to the group. The black’s sides were heaving but his head was up and his ears pricked bumping Chris with his nose as she took his reins so Melanie could dismount and Sam checked his legs.
" All feel fine Chris but it’s going to take a lot of work to prepare him for 16 furlongs. The 14 furlongs could be good but 16 furlongs? Do you think Traveler can do that?" Chris avoided Sam’s gaze and patted Traveler’s neck “I think he can.” Melanie nodded her head and took Traveler’s saddle from his back and walked toward the scales.

Chris looked on as Almost A Star jumped out of the gate and rushed up to second place 8 lenghts behind Gone To Ground who was leading.
Good spot Ashleigh Samantha murmured beside her. As the field past the 1/2 pole Star had shortened Gone To Ground’s lead to 4. Chris watched nervously glancing at Sam who was nodding to herself.
When the field swept by the 3/4 pole Samantha yelled out Now Ash.That’s the way let him go Chris started jumping up and down as Star dug in and gave chase shortening Gone To Ground’s lead down to the three but Chris spotted an new problem.
No she yelled as Tweeder shot up 4 lengths behind Star and gaining with each stride. When Star and Gone To Ground hit the stretch Tweeder was still flying and at the final Tweeder caught Star and put him away as Gone To Ground dropped back but Gone To Ground wasn’t finished as she powered back up at the finish to beat Star by 2 lengths and finish 2 lengths behind Tweeder.

Chris and Sam rushed out of the grandstand toward Ashleigh and Star. The young jockey expertly rode the sweating colt up to them and smiled tightly. All Star needs is a longer distance
Yes he does and that’s what he going to get when races in the Saratoga Special in a week. Sam said running her hands down Star’s legs as Ashleigh left to go weigh in and change.
