ok So there is a Quarter Horse/Paint Horse Sale on the 25th, of this month, really close to where I live. So I thought “Maybe I can find a nice English/jumping horse with some pro training for a reasonably cheap price. I mean it’s an auction and this is more then likely their last attempt to just get rid of the horse. It’s also been a longer and harsher winter up here so prices will probably be low.”
I searched though the book that my father brought home, and a ignored anything that was younger than a 2000 baby, and anything with Zippo Pat/Zippo Pine Bars, Sonny Dee Bar, and any other lines that there are just to many of. Personally I don’t like those lines there are just to many and to see those on the paper hardly amuses me anymore. I was probably passing up some good horses, but they were all western anyway.
I finally came to a horse that caught my eye. It wasn’t his name or his lines (at first) it was his age, color, and height. This Quarter Horse was a huge 17hh, Red Roan, and 7years old. He’s had pro training for English, and is a winner in the shows he’s been in. I was like Sweet he even has a cute name “The King of Red” So after all that I found his lines didn’t have Zippo, or Sonny but instead This horse has:
Windchester – Mr Tailwind
Sir Quncy Dan – Quincy Dan
The Continental
Might Bars – Three Bars
King
Joe Reed II
Poco Powerhouse – Poco Bueno – King
My jaw dropped to the floor. I could not believe my eyes. But Wait the good news dose not stop there This horse is at the end of the auction, he one of the last horses to be brought out this means most of the other people will have bought their moneys worth of horses, and I could possibly get this horse for dirt cheap.
I’m very excited that I happened across this auction, I’ve been looking for a new horse for a long time, with no luck.
You can see the pedigree of “Big Red” at all breed pedigree http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/the+king+of+red
lol… very cool… Auctions can be funny…
So my friend and I went down to the devil of all horse auctions… the New Holland Sale… it’s bad… seriously, everything they tell you is pretty true… and sad…
but nonetheless, we went to scope things out. We fell in love with this big red chestnut mare… I’m a sucker for a metallic red chestnut with 4 white feet and a star/stripe (chrome…) Well we thought she was a TB or an Anglo-arab: she was really tall with lots o’ leg and a cute dished face… big kind eye… She was just kinda chilling, watching everyone do their thing and not getting to upset… Later, when she comes into the ring, we find out she’s a papered SADDLEBRED! LOL… man… She sold for $500. Every once in awhile, you find something amazing at an auction. At the same auction we nearly bought a registered POA filly. The rest of the auction was Standardbreds (oh PA Dutch) and old foundered ponies… So sad
well the guy who puts the auction on…umm is like obsessed wuth Sonny Dee Bar, Zippo, and Impressive lines. It’s kindof sickaning when you actualy look at it. I mean yes i understand people want good horses with good lines…but they don’t all hive to be Zippo, Sonny, or Impressive or any mix of the three. If i see Zippo, Sonny Dee, or Impressive i basicaly go  whatever, and don’t even look twice unless its over 15.3 and trained in english, or jumping. if you want to look at some of the horses the have i’ll get the link for the book.
Haha, if I even see the word Impressive anywhere on any horse in that pedigree I walk away, I don’t care what it’s trained for or if it’s Hypp negative. I don’t want anything to do with those lines.
Really? Why exactly? Temperment? or Limited athleticism? I’ve had a lot of people say that to me recently, and I’m just curious as to what exactly their reasoning is…Now I’ll admit I’m not really a QH lover… but I know my way around a QH pedigree… I’ve had some very nice Impressive bred horses in my training barn, one was even N/H… I see nothing wrong w/ them other than they’re built for halter. They’re gorgeous, but some can be limited to western pleasure in terms of performance. I really like Zippo Pine Bar… the Invester and Zip’s Chocolate Chip are my 2 favorite ZPB stallions… I’m also kinda partial to anything that traces back to Diamond’s Sparkle…:-P… oh Carol Rose… I wish I could find more Lady Bug’s Moon QHs… that and Dash For Cash…
I don’t like Doc Bar horses, cuz I think a lot of them are certifiably crazy until they’re like 8 y/os. And Poco Bueno scares me only because there is that new flesh degenerative disease that’s linked to him.
well from what I’ve heared about the flesh degenerative disease is that it’s recessive, and will only show up if there are two Poco Beuno lines on the horse. So over all i’m no to worried about that because nothing has been linked to King (who appears twice due to Poco Bueno), and Poco lines only appear one.
I’m not very partial to any QH lines right now. I have to say though, I had a mare with Doc Bar on her papers and King right off, she had some Poco too. She was probably the best mare I had, and I bought her when she was 6. The only thing wrong with her was that she was trained for barrels and had that psycho barrel horse mentality until she made the mistake of ignoring my hands when we were running down a sandy length of trail. Silly mare, I wish I still had her.
As for Zippo, I don’t have big issues with him, its just that as with all nice studs he’s alll over the place. His babies do tend to be more refined though than alot of the more halter bred horses. His progeny can do things like english pleasure, which to say is not much better than western pleasure in terms of how they make the poor horses move.
Even though i’m into Arabs and now Thoroughbreds now i’ve worked with QH’s in the past and i have to say i love the Quincy Dan lines… the ones i’ve worked with off those lines have been very versitable and have enough of a personallity to keep me happy…
I like Quincy Dan lines also, but my favorite QH lines would be Three Jets, because all the horses I’ve met with Three jets on the papers are just awsome horses all around. I also like Qh’s with Midnight, and/or Midnight Jr. somewhere in their lines too.
