Afleet Alex Retired

sigh I can’t say I’m surprised, I’ve been expecting this since the Belmont, but it’s still depressing.

According to ESPN there was some sort of bone bruise he got after the Preakness and they didn’t notice it until later so now the bone’s compromised for 6-8 months? Though I mean, he’s already missed almost 6 months, and if they’re willing to wait that on a broken ankle, you’d think they’d wait it on a bone bruise. Wonder if this year’s TC phenomenon will make it through the entire rest of the year

He has avascular necrosis right in the spot were condylar fractures of the cannon bone typically occur, so the bone is getting little blood supply thus making it very brittle (according to reports in the DRF and Thoroughbred Times). Apparently it is just now showing up on xrays and is permanent according to one of his vets. If they try to race him again, he would be very prone to refracturing the leg. I agree it is very depressing, I think he would have been a great handicap horse, at least now we’ll have little Alex babies in a year or so…
