10/30

Definitely not our best Breeders’ Cup day. Don’t really want to think about how much money we lost. At least the undercard performed well.

Good week for the Hill. I was really nervous about taxes, but all my problems are now solved.

Wins

City Upon a Hill’s (3yo C, Crystal Rainbow) victory in the BC Sprint was especially sweet. He also qualified for studship, making him Crystal Rainbow’s second son to qualify. He’s had a great season thus far, and this was just the cherry on top.

Speaking of cherries, Black Cherry’s (4yo S, High Chances) victory in the BC Turf Mile was also a pretty big win, because it was his 19th SW. One more SW and he will be in the Hall of Fame for number of stakes wins. He’s been running super well, and if he has another season in him he might be able to beat his sire.

Thank Goodness (2yo F, High Chances) won the BC Juvenile Fillies, her first Gr. 1 win.

Ishka (4yo M, Sadler’s Wells) won the Filly & Mares Turf.

Life Line (2yo F, Long Live the King) broke her maiden.

Taps (2yo C, Call to War) earned his 2nd win.

Place
Color By Numbers (3yo F, High Chances) was 2nd in the Filly and Mare Sprint.

Devil’s Walk (3yo C, Nightfight) was 2nd in the BC Classic.

Rahmunctious (2yo F, Rahy) was 2nd behind stablemate Thank Goodness in the Juvenile Fillies.

Starling (3yo C, Rahy) was 2nd in his Gr. 3 stakes.

Smutty Cinnabar (2yo F, Highland Bandit) was 2nd in her NW1.

Lady Vesta (2yo F, Ring of Fire) was 2nd in her NW1.

Can B Wonderous (3yo F, Candidate) was 2nd in her NW2.

Show
Scarlet Fever (3yo F, Dark Continent) was 3rd in her Gr. 3.

Ring of Smoke (4yo M, Ring of Fire) was 3rd in her Gr. 2.

Lonely Ness (3yo F, Irish River) was 3rd in her OA.

Really good week for us.

On one hand, we definitely didn’t make back that BC entry fee, but even our two lone runners today finishing 4th and 5th collected about the same amount of cash as 5-6 of our horses actually hitting the board.

[color=red]Witch’s Point (4yo, Point Given) was 4th/7 in her OA.

[color=blue]Stressful Reality (2yo, Stressed) was a gamble but finished a very respectable 5th/9 in the BC Juvenile Turf. This was his first start beyond 7f, and only his 2nd start on the turf so I consider it a game effort!

What a disaster

[color=blue]Ch. Aguirre finished 6th/9 in Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.

[color=red]Ch. Iyaiyai finished 7th/9 in Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Fillies. No more stakes races for this two, for a while!

And then… [color=red]Tizzy Fit was 8th/12 in a maiden for 2yo fillies. I mean… even she!

Congrats on COAH’s win, Cat! I’ll be sending some mares his way for sure.

Crowing today.  My long shot, Bal Boree, who I picked up from a claiming race last month for $10k finished SECOND in the BC SC Endurance F/M.  I knew she would at least get a paycheck, but I wasn’t expecting second.  happy dance

Also had a bang up month betting.  My taxes for the year are no longer a worry

EDIT: (noticed everyone else doing this)
(2) 0-1(1)-0-1(1), $365,950

[color=red]Bal Boree (Almost Home), 2nd in the SC Gr. 1 Breeders’ Cup SC Distaff Endurance
[color=blue]Awaiting Jade (Worth The Wait), 4th in the Gr. 3 Discovery Handicap for 3yo

both super cheap claiming horses I picked up within the last month

I took a big risk, entering the highest number of BC horses ever (and gambling the highest amount of money as well).  Thankfully, it paid off - everyone finished 4th or better.  :astonished:  I over doubled what I put into the BC nominations/entries/shipping.

6(6) - 1(1) - 1(1) - 3(3) - 1(1) - $4,410.000

WINS

[color=blue]GCh. Ducati (3yo, Magic Cross {S} x Pennysurprise {S}) was definitely the highlight of the day, winning the G1 Breeders’ Cup Classic.  After his injury right before the Kentucky Derby and his subsequent lackluster performances there and in the Preakness, it was nice to have him come back and beat those same horses who killed his TC dreams.  I’m proud to have him prove himself worthy of their company after all.  I’m also glad that he shows no signs of slowing down, and I can’t wait to see what he can do at age 4.  Oh, and this bumped him to multi-millionaire status, too!

PLACES

[color=blue]GCh. Exit Poll (4yo, Irish River {G} x Family Gold {G}), our other stud qualified boy, was second in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Steeplechase Classic.  He will also continue to run next year until he shows signs of slowing down.

SHOWS

[color=red]Ch. D’lightful (4yo, High Chances {G} x D’licious {G}) finished 3rd in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Steeplechase Distaff.  She’s a homebred.

[color=blue]Ch. Laevateinn (2yo, Sleipnir {B} x Dixie Love {G}) was 3rd in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf - his first turf stakes race (even though he qualified higher in turf than in dirt).  Not bad!  He also earned his Ch. title, the second 2yo of ours to do so.  He’s a homebred.

[color=red]Ch. Brianza (2yo, Bellagio {B} x Sovereign Song {S}) made the long trek from Australia to run in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Fillies, where she finished 3rd in a photo finish.  Last year, my other Bellagio filly (Ch. Coquette) ran in the same race, but only finished 8th, so this is quite an improvement.  She’s a homebred.

FOURTHS

[color=blue]Ch. Cuchulain (4yo, Irish River {G} x Au Naturelle {S}) was 4th in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Turf.  He put in another solid performance, but studhood continues to evade him.  He still needs 3 more stakes wins of any level, so there’s still hope.

Congrats on everyone’s BC runners! We had 10 run in the BC races, all were 5th or better, our biggest breeder cup year so far

10(10)-3(3)-2(2)-2(2)-0 $5,180,000

Wins
[color=red]GCh. Uncanny Yodel (5yo, WCh. Highland Bandit (G) x Dreams Of You (S)) has been ROCKING it as an older mare, she is having her best racing season so far! She won the Breeders’ Cup SC Sprint by 3 3/4 lengths!  This is her second year in a row winning the BC SC Sprint

[color=blue]Ch. Lake Highlands (4yo, WCh. Highland Bandit (G) x She’s No Angel (S)) was a bit of a gamble entry, coming off of 2 months off and his last 2 starts weren’t good ones…  But he proved he could run today winning the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile by a nose!

[color=blue]Ch. Turnpike Wannabe (3yo, ICh. Candidate (G) x Expressway Kiss (G)) This homebred boy has really been making me proud this season. He has only run 5 times, but 4 of those times has been a stakes win. He won the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint by a neck

Places
[color=blue]NCh. Sunday Paper (5yo, Sunday Silence (S) x Ookashada (S)) I really thought him and Painted Raven would be 1 and 2, battling it out, congrats to Tigermore on the win!! Sunday Paper ran 2nd in the Breeders’ Cup SC Endurance

[color=blue]Ch. Naval Commander (3yo, WCh. I’m Your Angel (S) x Ch. Fleet Goddess (G)) Another homebred making me proud! He is coming off of a 2 month break and pulled off a 2nd in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint

Shows
[color=red]Excessive Passion (2yo, WCh. Crystal Rainbow (S) x Lonestar Girl (S)) ran an impressive 3rd in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies which was a huge field of very nice horses.

[color=blue]Ch. Fruitloop (5yo, Easy Goer (S) x Outbreak (G)) has been running a bit hit and miss lately so i’m happy with a 3rd in the Breeders’ Cup SC Classic.

5ths
We had a number of 5ths unfortunately…
[color=red]GCh. Solo Sunset (4yo, War Chant (B) x No Telling (G)) in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf . This surprised me a bit, she had been running really well… Was a large field though with some superb horses!

[color=blue]Ch. Burn It Down (4yo, ICh. What’s Your Point (G) x Expressway Kiss (G)) I took a chance entering him in the Breeders’ Cup SC Sprint but he is a really moody runner, always has been

[color=red]GCh. Careless Whisper (5yo, Alydar (S) x Fortunate Color (G)) I took a chance with her as well in the Breeders’ Cup SC Distaff Endurance because her last week was only about a week ago so her energy was down… Wasn’t paying attention. Too bad, I was hoping to get 3 Breeders Cup Wins out of her

Congrats Cat on a successful day. Black Cherry is just freakin’ awesome and glad Devils Walk did well for you.  Nightwatchman finished behind him in 3rd.

Not our best day but at least we earned our entry fees back with a little bit extra.

Wins
[color=blue]Moonless Night (Nightfight) was our shocker of the day by winning the BC Juvi on the dirt.  Top Shelf and The Fighter who we thought would do better finished a shocking 7th ad 8th.

[color=green]Ebaunee (As You Wish) won NW2.

Shows

[color=red]Fightin’ The Smoke (Nightfight) finished 3rd in the BC Distaff.  Not as well as I thought she would have done but we are still pleased.
[color=blue]Nightwatchman (Nightfight) in the BC Classic.
[color=blue]Whiled Eclipse (Worth My While) and [color=blue]Wizardworth (Highland Wizard) in their limited allowances.

Fourths

[color=red]Selisha (Nightfight) finished 4th in the BC Juvi Dirt Fillies.  Pretty good considering the tough competition in that one.

Same here!  I think my ponies got into some magical feed before they ran today.

9(8 )-6(5)-2(2)-0-0 $5,946,000

[color=red]Ch. Irish Rage (Irish River) came back from a vacation at the farm to wire a 15f Allowance for 3yo+ on the dirt.  She’s been struggling to find the winner’s circle this year, so hopefully this is the start of good things.

[color=blue]GCh. Pay the Boatman (Foolhardy) is now ONE win away from stud qualification, having eked out a victory in the Gr. 2 Knickerbocker Stakes.  If he manages that final hurdle, he will be my first homebred to do so.  Looking forward to a good 4yo season with him.

[color=red]GCh. Taking Vegas (TakeMeToHollywood) capped off an amazing season (top 3 finish 16 of 18 races) with a win in the BC SC Classic.  She earned both her millionaire and multi-millionaire status with the victory.  Vegas will continue to race next year.

[color=red]GCh. Sneaky Surfer (Sneak Peek) surprised me by winning the BC SC Distaff.  She’s had a really decent year and I expected her to at least be in the money after a nice little vacation.  She earned her GCh, millionaire, and multi-millionaire titles, and will race next year as long as she’s game.

The big shock of the day was [color=blue]Emperor (Long Live The King) winning the BC Juvenile Turf.  I entered him because I figured he might get a piece of it, but apparently he enjoyed the extra distance.  He earned Ch. status and now I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do with the longer tests available to 3yo’s.

I am so, so incredibly proud of [color=red]Ch. Unprecedented (Unabridged) and the year she’s had to date.  Despite my running her back too quickly a couple of times, she put together an impressive season, now including a win in the BC Juvenile Turf Fillies

[color=blue]Ch. Unsung Hero (Mr. Prospective) didn’t disappoint with his 2nd in the BC Juvenile, though he surely does seem to enjoy being the runner-up!  He might have a little equipment change next time he steps on the track.

[color=blue]Ch. Runaway War (War Chant) continues to bring home the bacon, his latest effort securing a 2nd place finish in the Gr. 3 Discovery Handicap.  Still working on his equipment and distance preferences.

The only also-ran today was [color=red]Je Ne Sais Quoi (What’s Your Point), who finished 6th in the BC Filly & Mare Turf.  She’s my only BC contender who didn’t get some time off at home before shipping to Belmont.  On the bright side, I think I might have an idea of where to go with her equipment.  Maybe next year!

Congrats to all on such stellar ponies!

Considering the fact that we had 8 horses ranked #1 in their respective BC races, to finish with only 2 BC winners is very disappointing. With nearly $9m in earnings, I can’t complain but compared to some other stables who only had a few entries, our earnings-to-runners rate was poor.  I look at how Coleman Branch did with their six BC runners (4 wins and 1 second) and Semiahmoo with 3 wins, 2 seconds and 2 thirds out of 10 BC runners and then look at how my horses did with less than half of them finishing in the top 3. I know I was greedy to enter as many runners as I did and it probably served me right, but with so many qualified, I hated having to choose which ones to run.

Joe of Littlefield made a tongue-in-cheek comment last week about renaming these races The Starfish Stables Cup, however, based on today’s results, I don’t think that would be appropriate  (a fact that I’m sure Shanthi will be very glad about ::)).

Anyway, congratulations to all of the other winners today. Your horses definitely ran miles better than mine.
