I don’t think your handicap for this week counts as it was posted after midnight est time.

From Handicap 2009 Rules
Picks must be posted to the forum by midnight EST on racing day (so Tuesday/Friday nights).

I also think your last handicap day of 1/16 might not count either as there was an “edit” after midnight. You could have “added” any unfinished handicapping after the deadline.  Not saying you did but that is what it could mean.

That I am not sure of but I am sure Shanti or Dawn know more about if edits are allowed after the deadline of midnight before races are run.

Brenda just brought up an interesting point with her comments about Paul’s last edit for 1/16 being after races for that day had been run.

A number of us go back into our posts after the results have been posted and note which of our picks had won money, also how we have done overall for that day.

Maybe what we should do in future is make a copy of our picks and update the copy, thus preserving the integrity of our picks.

I think that we can copy our posts without reediting them and I’ll test that out in a minute.

If you want to copy your picks post and update the results without affecting your original post, then click on the “Quote” icon above your original post. That will open a new post with your original post in “quotes” and you can change the copy to your hearts content.

The edit after the midnight deadline was before races were ran and therefore changes could have been made or races that weren’t yet handicapped could have been added.

example: you had time to get 25 races done and posted before the midnight deadline. You came back later, maybe after you got home from work and “added” the rest of the 25 races for a total of the 50 races. 

It doesn’t say in the Handicapping rules weather or not you can make “edits” to your handicapping after the deadline and before races are run.

There is editing done after the races are run because we do our own “scoring”.  That is not the question at hand.

It is weather “editing” after the deadline of midnight and before races have run, is allowed.

The rules are quite simple… all post & edits need to be done before midnight EST… which for us on the west coast is 9pm… any edits after that time void all picks for that day… after races are run you can go in and edit for scoring purposes… I’m not sure if Shanthi keeps a close watch on that… I just assume she has a bcak up of that dayes post… and any changes out of the norm… will be delt with privately…

I’m not absolutely certain on that… Shanthi would have to verify these facts… I think for the most part we are on the honor system for Handicapping… cheating would just be so wrong in this game… we all work so hard to gwt where we are…

I got caught out a couple of weeks ago, thinking that the deadline for getting picks in was midnight PST instead of EST. There were a number of posts about it (see 1/2) and it was confirmed that the deadline is midnight EST. I disqualified my picks for that date, as well as one date in December, in which
I had finished making my selections after midnight EST (I had posted some of the December picks before midnight, and gone back in and edited the post after midnight EST to put in the rest, thinking that I still had time, but, as I didn’t know which ones had gone in before the deadline and which had gone in after, I disqualified all of that dates picks).

When we make edits to a post (even if we are merely “scoring” our picks), our changes are not highlighted in any way so it is impossible to judge whether the changes were just “scoring” or actually changing our picks (I don’t believe any of us would stoop so low as to do this). I’ve often wondered if there was a way to ensure that no suspicion could be raised against us and this is the only way I can think of. Fortunately, when Shanthi gets around to automating Handicapping, this will become moot, but, until then, I plan to make a copy of my picks and use the copy for scoring.

I remember when I first did handicapping, I was going off of west coast time.  So, I did a couple and low and behold, they didn’t count because they were after the 12 midnight EST. 

I have seen a couple of times where there have been edits after the midnight deadline, but it has been quite awhile.

Maybe there can be a “moderator” for the handicapping.  This person makes sure that all picks are done before the deadline.  And does random checks to make sure everyone is staying on the up an up.(I am sure everyone is, just put it in there for GP)

I think if it is clearly printed in the rules that there are to be no edits after the deadline before races are run and everyone who handicaps, “police” the times and dates, then it is one less thing for Shanti to deal with.
Should also have in there about getting your monthly totals done by a certain a date(say the 10th) of each month, then Shanti can pay everyone on say the 15th of each month.  Instead of having to wait weeks for everyone to post their totals.

A Moderator could post everyone totals and have it done quicker. 
That would of course be up to Shanti IF she wants to do that. The moderator could also handle the questions and such and that frees up “The Boss Lady” to do more coding(yuk!!!).

Just a thought or my 2cents worth.  I am available to help with anything you need on here(except coding) Shanti.

If Shanthi thinks that the moderator idea is a good one, I’d be willing to do it. Maybe have two moderators as a crosscheck.

I doubt we need a moderator; generally, we do a good job of moderating each other.  For example: these last few posts.

And yes, all posts AND EDITS must be finished by midnight EST.  Although I agree that the wording could be made more blunt so that no one can argue the fact…when Shanthi gets the time, that is.  :slight_smile:

Generally, someone is bold enough to say something to someone who posts AFTER the date (or modifies their post).  I know I sometimes check it due to sheer boredom (while skimming people’s picks for the races my horsies are running in, just to see how others think they will fare  :stuck_out_tongue:).  So long as we all do that, most (if not all) late posts/edits should be caught.  :slight_smile:

That is how I saw it.  I have nothing to do because I am broke and can’t run horses till CW is final and I get some money.
I peruse the handicaps and see what people are picking and do my own when I have time.

I think maybe making the wording a little more straightforward would be best. 

I don’t think we need a moderator now that I have had time to think about it(got a horse trimmed and I was thinking(very dangerous!!!) cause I was bored holding the horse).

Official word: No mod is going to be added for the handicapping.  As Ivy Creek said, you seem to do an adequate job of “policing” each other.  (Plus, hello, it’s a game so we’re just going to go with the honor system, OK?)

As soon as 1) I have time 2) I can figure out how to set things up so that it’s semi-impossible to become a millionaire overnight, I will be setting up official “betting” (since FF races do include odds now).  Then, it won’t matter because it will all be automated (not to mention anonymous), and there won’t be any need to post picks, or edit such posts.

As Dawn said, though, officially the “rule” is to have all picks (including edits) done by midnight EST before races are run.
