Workout comments

Hey guys,

I just wanted some opinions about how you guys read certain workout comments.  When I’m working horses out I’ll often randomly put equipment on all of them just to see if a few of them take to it or not (ie: X loves his equipment, or X hates his equipment) to rule things out.  BUT what about the other comments: “X was really well mannered today.”,  “X was a dream to ride today”, “X is very easy to rate” would you say those would be equipment related comments?

Looking to get a good discussion going with lots of thoughts so please chime in if you have an idea on this.

I don’t know what to say as I always try new stuff in races, never thought to try workouts as I only do them once a week automatically. Tho what I look for are the actual comments on ditto loves his equipment or ditto hates his equipment, now if they are naughty and keep acting up I try an F-8 , and if I get spooked during workout a lot I try blinkers, then a shadow roll. As far as wraps I just randomly try those when figuring out new horses to see if it helps when both short and long surfaces result in bad placing. I throw on wraps and look at workouts to see what else to try. It’s kind of half a$$ed but seems to work for me. Lol

I tend to think jocks are lying liars who lie when it comes to equipment.  They’ll say one of my ponies “hates” his equipment when it’s the only thing he wins in.

Also, unless the jock says “I know this horse like the back of my hand,” take anything they say (except about willingness/crankiness, which deals with NE) with a grain of salt.

Lol @ lying liars that lie!  Good one Cat!

When I have a horse that worked a lot with different pieces of equipment, I just look back in the workout history to see how they behaved generally - for example, did they spook a lot in blinkers, or were the workouts mostly good. If the horse works generally good in something, then I keep that equipment even if the jockey doesn’t say that the horse likes it.

@Carole  That’s not me… I think the expression comes from Al Franken’s book (Lies and the Lying Liars who Tell Them)

I hadn’t heard it before it’s funny!
