What to do with her

I’m at a loss as to what to do with my filly, Ch. Daytona Weekend. She was fantastic at 2 but apparently that was her prime year. I rested her Oct-Jan 2016, then for a month in March, and from May to July. I put her through the jump trials and her reports aren’t great. I keep experimenting with equipment and nothing. If she were older, I’d retire. She just seems so young!

What would you do?

I imagine she may just have peaked early as a 2yo.

What I would do–if you have not sent her to a boarding farm recently–is send her home for at least two weeks to a month of rest. I imagine her NE is low. I have had ponies perk up after a rest, though their first race back after a rest is usually nothing to write home about.

Or try her at distances that are less than 10f. She just won at 9f and I think her most recent race was probably too long for her.

Sorry to see she’s floundering as a 3yo. I remember chasing her tail as a 2yo–and if it’s any help, some of my 2yo stars can now no longer run themselves out of a paper bag.

What I’d like to do with all those flash in the pan 2yo’s that I have is beat them in the head with a stick.  >:D

Your mare seems to prefer sprint distances. You managed to help her earn 200+ points, which is impressive!  However, I noticed that even in sprints her performance was not always 100% across the board. I think what you have is a case of a horse peaking at two (one of my mares placed second in the Breeder’s Cup as a 2YO and then promptly ditched the leader board), mixed with maybe a little bit of inconsistency. I would get her back to sprinting on the flat and keep her in low-priced allowance races. Race her here and there for the rest of the year, and try her again after the new year. If she’s not earning you any money in, say, half her races, then change her status, make a date with a stallion, and await your champion babies.

I hate the idea of retiring too, I would just keep her in lower level races for a bit to see if she perks up and then move her up if she improves, but she looks to have a pretty good record on the Classic distance steeples so far.  She seems to have hated when the track is wet even as a 2yr old, maybe try more sprints on a non-wet track?

Dont give up! I’ve had great 2yos, that end up coming out of it around age 4, then I’ve had them I’ve also had them burn hot and cold. Try jump trials when she’s old enough, but don’t give up ,  I had one filly that was mediocre until 4 and I sold her at 3 she became a ch. for her new owner ! ( this happens to me usually with colts!)

I’ll put her on the shelf for a bit, give her a breather, and try again in cheap SC races. She seems to like medium distance SC (8-9.5f) despite having sprinted at 2. If still nothing come maybe March, she’ll probably start dating.

I’ve retired too many mares to brood last year, and this year I had mostly 2yo’s to race  so next year I’m planning to leave all the racehorses on the track, even if they seem hopeless now

It’s a shame you put her over the jumps as she her record pegs her as a dirt sprinter.

If I send mine home to the farm it’s normally for 90 days plus for a decent rest, I find once back in work they recapture some of their old form, I’ve also brought a few in sales and auctions that only needed a rest

Hopefully down the track you maybe able to return her to flat racing.

Yeah I’m not sure why I did that. Been kicking myself since. If I could hit an undo button, I would!
