Training

So we are trying to figure out training, keeping your horses fit but not tired… anybody have any suggestions on a general training schedule? I dont want to tire my guys out but I also dont want them sitting around getting all fat  8)  Any help is appreciated!

My rule of thumb is:

  • only train when energy is A

  • pick whichever track surface has the best condition (fast vs good, etc)

  • if fitness is B, canter 1 mile

  • if fitness is C, canter 1 mile + gallop 1 mile

  • if fitness is D/F, canter 1 mile + gallop 1 1/2 miles (unless it’s a 2yo in which case they can only gallop 1 mile)

This generally lowers energy by 1 grade (sometimes not even that), and bumps fitness up 1 grade (usually, sometimes not quite), so I only have to work horses out every few days before they’re A/A.

I used to have my ponies on an auto-workout, too, of walk 1 mile or jog 1 mile, to get experience with their jockeys, but I opted for manual training to keep a better eye on their performance/energy and fitness levels.

Hope that helps!

That actually helps a ton, thanks mama!
