If Zenyatta ever get’s a race in her. She’s going to forget she’s a racehorse pretty soon!
Go Super Filly!! =) Wooo ! Wow that was close (and exciting), but I’m so glad she won.
Yeah, well done filly. And nice job with Mine That Bird, hr proved his Derby win wasn’t a fluke.
That was a great race. If Mine That Bird would’ve had the 1/16 of a mile more that he had at the Derby he would’ve caught her. That was really a well ridden race by Smith though. And for Bird to come wide from the outside is even more impressive!! You could tell the filly was having to dig harder towards the end, i think she probably just got distracted by the crowd and noise. Jeeze that was great Congrats to Borel and Smith.
I am so impressed with both horses–Bird for proving that he’s not a fluke and Rachel for showing the boys her tail. And from what my bf was saying (I missed the race, long story, so not happy about it, LOL), Rachel wasn’t handling the Pimlico surface very well. Imagine if she does? I’m just hoping this effort didn’t zap her–love to see her win the Belmont and prove that she is the amazing filly she is. If either Bird or Rachel win it, I will be happy
Borel did say Rachel wasn’t handling the surface as well as he would like, and I think it was obvious that Bird definitely would have caught her if the race had been just a few strides longer. If they both run in the Belmont and Rachel likes the surface… that will be a very interesting race!
Here’s my opinion:
-
Mine That Bird would have won the race if he had not had to deal with traffic. He was badly blocked and lost quite a bit of ground.
-
Rachel Alexandra will have no chance against him in the Belmont. Given how she looked at the end of this race, I would rather see her not run. I would like to see her get some time off, run in a moderate race, and then seriously contest the BC Distaff. Anything else would, IMO, be risking another bad injury. Racing can’t afford that.
I agree. Too many horses do the entire Triple Crown and then are never heard from again, or they show up in the BC races and get trounced…it takes a lot out of them. I’d rather see her get a nice long break and then aim for some races later this summer/fall.
She may have the breeding to do 12f, but she would’ve been beaten in another furlong. Rags To Riches won the Belmont, but she didn’t race between the Oaks and the Belmont. I think RA’s connections would be pushing their luck* to put her in the Belmont.
*Not to say that her Preakness win was based on luck, since she’s obviously a nice filly…more that I could see her breaking down in the Belmont, or otherwise getting into trouble.
She did burn that first half with Big Drama, who’s no cheap speed, so I wasn’t surprised to see her tiring badly in the stretch, but she still wasn’t going to let MTB by. I don’t know just how much the Preakness took out of her, and I hope that if she doesn’t seem up to it that Jackson & Co. skip the Belmont and let her rest up for a summer/fall campaign. They haven’t announced what they were going to do, just that all options are open.
She’s such a wonder girl.
