How do horses qualify for breeders cup races? Do they have to be nominated before they show on the qualifiers list?
My SC horse Superbia has won 3 SC stakes races this year and one stakes place but does not show up on any of the SC lists.
I wondered if it was because he has won over all 3 distance groups and so had not won enough to appear in any of them. but some of the qualifiers have not won any stakes races at all.
I don’t want to nominate just to see if he will qualify then find out he has no chance of it!
Have you tried looking at the nominations page VIA the racing links? You should be able to select view options for each of your racers and it should tell you roughly what number they are on the list e.g #3 of 100 for a particular BC race and that should give you an idea whether to nominate or not.
If Superbia is not on the qualifiers list for any of the SC races, he may need to be Supplemented for one of them.
Go to BC Nominations and look for Superbia on your list of horses. If you see him, click on “View Options” and it will show you where he is ranked for each of the races he is eligible to run in. You can then decide if you want to Supplement him for one of the races. Note however, if you Supplement him for one race, he won’t be automatically Supplemented for any of the other races and Supplementary Nominations aren’t transferable to another race. So you will have to decide which race you want to Supplement him for and stick to it.
I usually look to see which race he has the lowest ranking for and decide on that one, as the lower his ranking is, the better is the chance that he will be ranked low enough to be in the top 14 on the list of qualifiers.
You have until Monday, Oct 29th to decide which race you would want to Supplement and enter him in.
I completely forgot about that page! But how are these ranks calculated? It seems that She’s Outlawed would have some chances in these races, the Supplemental Nomination page says that she’s #1 of 79 for Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Fillies, and #3 of 89 for Juvenile Fillies. But her track record is:
Dirt 7(4) 3(1) 2(2) 1 1(1) $161,750
Turf 2 1 0 0 0 $16,050.
She’s the one with unearned GCh. title
As I mentioned in a bug report, the calculations go first based on performance over that exact condition (8f turf or whatever), and then ignore distance (take 8f dirt into account). It assumes that if your horse is a SW on dirt they won’t completely suck on turf, and gives them credit for potentially being competitive there.
I have two horses, both 3YO, that I wanted to enter in the (Dirt) Sprint, but they aren’t allowing me to enter either of them. I could enter them in the Turf Sprint or SC Sprint, if I wanted to, as well as a few other races. They both have Lifetime Nominations to the BC. There are spaces still open for that race and, as today is the last day for entries for the BC, I know that the stipulation about being among the top 14 qualifiers has been lifted (or am I wrong about that)?.
Is there something else that I haven’t taken into consideration blocking their entry into this race?
The only condition that’s “lifted” is the top 14 qualification. The last day of entries is open for the top 20 qualifiers, not any horse that ever ran in a race and is BC nominated.
